They set up the pins and thought the Republican political machine, which a ail powerful and controlled by the railroads, would accomplish the defeat of Gov! OIL TRUST IS DEFIANT. Monopolists Who Hold the Republican Administration in Coi.tempL
Attorney General Hadley of Missouri Is trying to unravel the tangled skein of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and for that purpose had Henry H. Rogers, vice president and director of that corporation, on the stand to try aud discover whether it owna the controlling interest In the Standard Oil Company of Indiana, the Waters-Pierce Oil Company of Missouri and the Republic Oil company Mr. Roger:, who Tom Law-son hows is the real master of the Standard Oil trust, refused to answer the questions that would shed any light on the subject Mr. Hadley declares that he will take all these questions to the supreme court of New York state to secure an order for Mr Rogers to show cause why he shall not anwer them. The bureau of corporations In Washington is said to have been biveati gating the Standard Oil trust and no doubt has the evidence to convict its officers of the crimes they are accused of. so why does the administration not aid the state of Missouri by producing this evidence? The Standard Oil officials, it is claimed, have threatened the administration that if thty are molested there will be trouble and the extraordinary statement is made that it controls a majority of the members of the present Republican congress The Republicans Will bare to tackle Standard Oil or virtually admit that It controls thm. and the first question to settle Is can the officials of this gigantic corporation refuse to give evidence that is necessary to prevent them from plundering the peopie" In other words, are the trusts or the people running the government of the t'ated States? A few months in jail may change the tone of this arrogaut trust msersere.
