The loot has seldom failed- Sometimes it has amounted to 125 0") from t single robbery, and it nas scarcely ever been leas than 1 No: since the days whn the famous Reno gang of bandits terrorized the people with its daring crimes has
the counTy been so boldly worke i i bank burglars as It was during the autura Just pas'. With the advnof ths rural telephone and the derelopment of the tnternrban electric railways the sta-es boasted of progress that was popularly supposed to make the profession of yeggman so hazardous that organizations of bur : glars and systematic looting of banks wou.i be abandoned. It la a singular fact that few hank robbers are caught. Now and then n gang of them will make a mess of It snd brlns the wrath of th citizen oldlery down on their heel?, but the average of mortality In the business is below that of street car li lintt and automobil ing. Bank robbers work in Quartettes, as did the adventurers of L'imas, sn 1 abiut the only difference between their lives and those of the famous Three M :--e-. r is that th" ' hank robbers' adver.' urea are lnvarla-

In slumber Indeed, their method-i are
so Identical from cne end of the great Mississippi valley to the urher that one might readily suppose all ths robberies were the work of the am ;-an. Detectives, however, know bett-. Tne Robbing Formula. The formula for robbing a bank Is Imple. simpler than one not famllksr with the working: of a gam: of afv eraekers would suppose. The gang gets a few sticks of dynam.te. takes QM nltroglyef rtne :t of It and carries this violent explosive
away It hs tien tip a tiki, inv Qiisntltiet of nitniglycerlne have been stolen from a gsnnnfaetarlng plant where the deadly explosive is made In the northern pit of Indiana It Is the supposition of Capf. Kinney, of the In lianapolls detective, department, that thrt robbers have thu nntOSlvO ht ! ler. aw.y la some woo Is ar.d carry away small q'taall'le of It as thty need It. Besides the explot-I.e the e'her essential to robbing a safe Is n tar of sonn. Sometimes ths gaa; has bnr-
to work with fhe sp and "gonpT (ths latter being their name for nttro-glyc-rtnei and blow their way in. Th safe comes next. They make a soap lip a, the top crack of the safe door, cailt the crack of the safe door all the way down, and pour .he nitroglycerine Into the lip. from
which It runs down tnslde the door long the sld f. ot the bottom. Thit lOOO, the thieves put ths percussion cap ,n th. ap Up. attach n foot-Iorg fuse light it snd retire outside, closicg the door Sometimes when h y j are Mowing a safe inside a vault they evn close the door of the vault. Thepr.eaut.ons lessen the noise and minimize th inngef at an alarr.. Oil leteetlrwi say tha there are really no safes that can withstand th!s attack with nitroglycerine. Many I so-called b-.irglar-proof safes have j been lai 1 pin until their experien-e has sught them to lose faith In the nam- True, tbere are safes that fre(jue.v.y resist attack, but this is be raus. tn. th;eves do not know how to Jo it; not because it couldn't bs done. The detectives say that lank re,b- , bing is a crime in which only white men engage It Is unknown of I negroes. Another f.ir.gular fa t a4 -' it Is that the men engaged tn It are i almo3 all of tn age. It Is not the : work of boys or graybeards. but the sdv.-iMire of men varying little from 35 yurs Most of them are ex con victa pe'eoti.es have obs-rved thai a safe blow, r nn" ".settled." aa they call .onvtetlon snd imprisonment.
