she turned to Mrs. Kissem and said: "J nave not ei leiemphed to any friends to meet me in New one, as 1 tow mamma I should. Suppose you and I go to a hotel tonether? You shall chaperons me and be my guest. We can share a room and have delightful talks at night. Do vou agree?" -' it range glitter seemet to scintillate from Mrs. Kissem's eves as she replied: "Your suggestion and invitation are far too kind and thoughtful for a lonely woman to lightly reject. Thank you very much. 1 accept with great pleasure." . . , . , Arrived in Now York our travelers and their baggage were speedlv conveyed to a commodious hotel in a posit ion handv for shopping, and possibly a theatre. Having engaged a large bedroom, they went upstairs and had their baggage unstrapped. By the time they had their belongings disposed of to their joint satisfaction, the hour was late, and they agreed that it was bedtime so thev startedto make their toilets for the night. Mrs. Kissem undressed in the bathroom, and by the time she was readv to get into bed Miss Hauton, very tired from her journev, was alreadv lost in the land of dreams. When Nfiss Hauton awoke in the morning she found that it was 9 o'clock, and that Mrs. Kissem was already dressed. The latter laughed off Miss Evelyn's apologies for her slothfulness, saving that she was always a very early riser, and made it an 'invariable rule to be out of doors by 30 a. m. however late she retired. The acquaintance thus peculiarly formed noened rapidly and progressed bv leaps and bounds to friendship, resulting, after two or 'three days, in all sorts of plans that had the common basis of going somewhere or doing something together. Having dispatched to Mrs. Hauton a letter full of enthusiastic praises of her new friend, Evelyn followed it up bv another announcing that she had invited Mrs. Kissem to come back to Saratoga and stay with her for the remainder of the season. Mrs. Kissem in Saratoga was not by any means a rival of Evelyn's; on the contrary, she appeared rather repellent trmon- anH now to M)s ftauton'ssururise. Evelvn becran

The middle of September came ana the season wanea. Visitors spread their wings for flight, and with them the Hautons who went to their house in Fifth avenue, a recent purchase that they had not yet occupied. Mrs. Hauton was not destined to remain in New i ork,
though, as a telegram came from Omaha telling her that she should come on at once in her own interests. Mrs. Kissem could chaperone Evelvn, so, having no anxiety on that score, Mrs. Hauton took time by the forelock, and with but little baggage made an immediate start for the west, having her maid Antonette accompany her. Miss Evelvn and Mrs. Kissem had plenty to occupy them
