Events in Various Portions of Indiana Told by Wire. Pleads Not Guilty. Bedford, Ind., March 18. -James McDonald, indicted by the grand jury for the murder of Miss Sarah Schafer in this city on the night of January 21, was brought here Thursday from the Bloomington jail, where he had been confined since his arrest, and arraigned. McDonald pleaded not guilty to the two counts of murder and attempted assault. His trial was set for the first day of the May term of the Lawrence county circuit court. Died in Husband's Arms. Muncie, Ind., March 18. -Mrs. Delmer Pence, a literary woman, died in the arms of her husband after holding a reception in observance of her birthday anniversary. After the departure of the guests, Mrs. Pence approched her husband, saying: "Catch me, Delmer, or I will fall." Falling into the arms of her husband, the woman expired. An autopsy revealed the fact that death was caused by heart disease. Mrs Pence was apparently in the best of health. Widow Gets Damages. Columbus, Ind., March 18. -The case of Mrs. Anna Abel against Cudwith Abel, demanding $10,000 damages, was compromised here by Mrs. Abel receiving $3,500. The suit was brought to collect damages for the murder of Mrs. Abel's husband by the defendant. Last May Cudwith Abel shot and killed his nephew, Charles Abel, and was convicted of manslaughter and sentenecd to serve from two to twenty-one years in prison. Miners to Convene. Terre Haute, Ind., March 19. -Presi-dent-elect Boyle, of the Indiana Mine Workers, sald a convention of Indiana miners will probably be called next week to take preliminary steps for the joint conference with operators. President Kolsen, of the Indiana operators, says there will be a meeting of the Interstate

Women Invest in Oil. Muncie, Ind., March 18. -For the last two weeks from one to three oil companies have been incorporated in this county to operate in the Selma, Albany and Eton fields. The Old Glory Gas and Oil company, capitalized at $60,000, numbers among its directors three

Muncie, Ind., March 18.- Simon Conn, the second oldest pioneer of Delaware county, died at his home one miie north of this city He was born in Prebie county, O., in 1817. In 1837 he started the first direct stage line from Muncie to Cincinnati, also hauling freight. In 1857 he hauled to Mauncie from Cincinnati the big bell now in the courthouse tower. War on Slot Machines. Franklin, Ind., March 18. -The council has issued an order for the removal of all slot machines in the city. For the past two years numbers of machines have been in the cigar stores of the city. Griffins, a worker in the Jaaper county oil fields, met death in an oil tank.
