The other day in London there
was put up for sale in an art room a portrait of a ladv in a white mus
lin dress with yellow trimming by
tiatnsborough on canvas 30 by 25 inches, an awful lookinir wreck, cov
ered with dirty varnish and having
i wo large notes in tbe canvas as unprepossessing an object as am

laoy at w orttung, had been hawked about for some time, the owner being anxious to realize $25 on it, bat
no one apparently wanted it, and it was taken to the art room, where its merits were discovered. When put
ud ior sale it started at $1,000, which in a couple of seconds had retched $?5.üÖU. and in leas than a

How Soon a Train Steee.
At a recent convention of air brake men an interesting reoort was
presented showing how the distance a mm .a .
retiuired lor the stopping of trains
naa been reduced by the new high speed brake.
A train running 80 miles an hour
was stopped in 2,240 feet by the high speed brake at 110 pounds, where the ordinary pressure of 70
pounds took exactly half a mile to bring it to a stand. Other train speeds and reductions in stopping
mances were tnese: f nty miles an hour, from 840 to 700 feet; 65 miles,
l.uw to 30 feet ; 60 miles, 1,330 to 1,030 feet; 65 miles, 1,635 to 1,300
leet; 70 miles, 2,010 to 1,530 feet;
7ä miles, 2,?i7j to 1,840 feet. Laundry Priesa.
Max 0'Hell once wrote this on
the prices of American laundrii
"Excuse a reflection on a subject of
a very domestic character. My clothes have come from the laun
dress w ith the bill. Now let me give
you a sound piece of adv ice. When you go to America bring with yon a dozen shirta; no more. When these are soiled buy a new dosen, and so on. You will thus eat a ann-
ply of linen for many years to come
anu save your washing bills in America, where the price of a ahirt
is much the same as the cost of
washing it." Bis Blast.
There has recently been effected . r aa..
