Bruno Bsettncr, Es,. Jasper citizens generally were shocked and surprised on Tuesday morning, Feb. 18, 1902, by the sad expression, "Lawyer Buettner is dead ! " He was tbe oldest attorney practicing at the Dubois county bar, having been admitted to the practice here in 1S58. A long list of eminent attorneys who were then his confere at tbe bar, have preceded him to the bar of God among them such legal lights a L. Q. DeBruler, T. F. DeBruler, R. M. Clements, T. R. Cobb, John Baker, H. G. Barkwell, Conrad Baker, Judge Simpson, and many others who shed honor upon their legal lives in many elevated positions. Mr. Buettner first began tbe prac tice of law in Chicago, in 1851, and afterwards went to New Jersey, and from there came to Jasper in the summer of 1358. He first entered the practice here by himself, but in a short time formed a partnership with Capt. VYyley C. Adams, and the firm of Adams k Buettner did the largest legal practice in Jasper for a number of years, bis knowl
edge of German at that time being
of great assistance in securing business. The partnership continued till Mr. Adams moved to Pike coun
ty, where he died. During this partnership he went to Celestine on
legal business, and returning after
dark was thrown from his horse on
the road, and received a broken leg, which ever after remained a great source of discomfort to bim, a part of the bone bad to be taken out, and left one leg shorter than the other. But he bravely continued the battle of life till tbe end at the time of his death being town attorney, and for several years previous having rilled with general satisfaction that position. Mr. Buettner was born at Wei
mar, Germany, Aug. 22, 1825, and was consequently 70 years, 5 months and 26 day old at his death. He leaves a widow, a sister, 2 sons, Otto, of Andereon, Ind., and Charlee, of Jasper, and five daughters, Mrs. Joseph I. Schuhmacher and Matilda, of Anderson ; Mr. T. Stephenson, of Haysville ; and Olga and Alma, of Jasper, to mourn the Iocs of a kind father. Hi remains were buried at tbe Jasper grave yard yesterday, after religious service at Trinity church by Rev. Mr. Kienle and Mr. Raush. May he rest in peace. fT Postmaster Hunter informs
the Courier he has received orders
