Mioittcr Wu's Impresaioo ot Americis Wim. His Excellency, Wu Ting fanj:, the Chinese minister to this c un try, has written for the Ladies' Home Journal IB article eiuhn lying his ItJMWfjSjijosMj and bkl opiui in of American Women. This remarkable diplomat, who has made himself so popular alike with the Government and the poeple, is fam ed for his frankness. He always says just what he thinks, and he usually says it in a way not hard to understand. He is a keen observer,

and his travels and experience in the I'nited States have given him good opportunities for studying the American women. A Half -Million Dollar Poem. It is stated that "The Absent Minded Beggar," by Kudyard Kipling, has realized in various ways about M85.000 lor tlu IWmllUsJ of the British soldiers who have tought in South Africa, or somewhat more than 110,000 for each line. December Ladies' Home Journal. All active love idealizes that h, sees and loves the ideal of till loved one. Often, indeed, the absorption in the ideal is so complete that the outer life is mistakenly supposed to be identical with it, '.bus opining the way to shocks and bitter diappointments. Dec. The Kansas City Journal thus quotes an old Missouri man: "I've a daughter that's the handsomest young unman in our town. She's rttOf'n tint; she's smarter ' light' it:' -miartor 'n 'Jim' Blaine. She made the vale-o'-victory speech in high school last Miminer, an' .-he's DOO learnin' all about the shorthand pot-hungeis in a private business college. But 1 ain't a-goin' to

let her stop theer, by Jingo, 'and he brought down his knife handle with a bang on the table "I'll never, never let up till her eddication is finished in the best cemetery I in the land. I guess I know what , life is, gents, and don't you forget it. I've served in the calvary myself for mor'n live years, an' had a hand inthe little game over to Cuby. Any man that served in Cucle Sam's calvary, and he needn't be one of Posy's rough riders nayther, ain't worth a dose of this oyster stow if he don't know life." Congress lias begun its long grind. It is to be hoped it will accomplish something to relieve the common people of the ever increasing expense of living, caused by the "great prospeiily" of millionaire manufacturers, bankers and stock and grain gamblers but it is not probable it will. The man who doesn't fail isn't always a lUOCess by a long shot.

THE DEVIL IN SEARCH OF A WIFE. His Majesty, Satan, one morning awoke, And found that his wife was dead; He said to himself: "This is really no joke My household retjuires a head; But where shall I find on this limited eaith A woman to fill such a difficult berth? "For ehe must be witty and rapid of tongue As shrewd as the shiewdest of men, As lovely as Venus, deliciously ycung, And careless to profit or gain. For I would be loved for myself alone And not for ray dark, satanic throne. "But far more important than beauty or youth Though, of course, I should like tluse as well Aie the virtues of innocence, candor and truth, For though I may rule in hell, The woman who holde ray wife's position Must be entirely iboVO suspicion." Bo the devil set forth on his anxious quest For a lady to go below; But be found thai be lost his natural rest, And his progress was terribly slow, For the woman he wanted was hard to lind, And the cares of his kingdom weight d on his mind. The daughters of England were lovely he saw A nation of fair haired queens ; But their rosy lips could lay down the law, And they lived beyond his means. So he quietly wandered over to France, And there the Parisiennes led him a dance. And here, for a time, he thought he had found The actual thing that he wanted; But ere another month had gone round, The devil was somewhat daunted. "These ladies are quite beyond me, that's plain," He said to himself as he left for Spain. But here, though the women were pretty and kind. He was very much disappointed; They had eyes, to be sure, but they lacked a mind, And their hair was too much anointed. So again his majesty sallied forth, And this time thought he would visit the North. But why need I tell of his lengthening work Of all the countries he tried, Till one day he suddenly thought of Hoorierdom, And instantly hitherward hied. But though he was quick, the women were ready, Their heads were cool and their hands were steady. They took one look, and they looked him through, And they knew what he wanted at once; And innocence beamed from their eyes so blue, And candor was queen for the nonce. Oh ! you should have seen how their eyelids fell As they timidly asked the news from hell. The devil was Haltered, and llunied, and pleased; What grace, what refinement, what sense! How quickly his half-expressed ideas were seized, And nothing he said gave offence! He never had felt so at home before, And he liked and admired them more and more. But time was pressing he could not wait, Though he scarcely knew how to choose ; üo he offered himself and his royal State, His crown, and his dead wife's shoes, To a maiden whose virtue, and candor, and tact Were all that the devil himself could f xact. The damsel accepted and did not repent As the day of the wedding drew nigh, For, you know, that to hell there's an easy descent, And our friends will drop in by-and bye. And the devil declared himself more and more blessed As the innocent creature he joyfully pressed. But when sie was married and safely installed As queen in the regions of shade, 'Tis said that the devil was somewhat appalled At the bargain he found he had made; And thought on the whole 'twould have been as well Had he stopped at home and married in hell.
