When Judge Ely discharged
the jury in the Doersam vs Fritch case Wednesday at 5 o'clock, he told them as taxpayers they should not complain of costs of court, when they had deliberated two days on a case, and then not agreed, thus putting the county to the expente uf trying it again. He thought thev should have rendered a verdict.
Greatly Exaggerated. On Wednesday reports reached Jasper that the French Lick hotel was burned, and that many other buildings were on fire, and the New Albany fire department had been called upon for assistance. The Courier telephoned for information, and in reply Dubois county's former clever fellow citizen, Mr. J. M. Ellis, who is now keeping a hoarding house at the Lick, informs us that the main hotel building did not burn at all, only two bath houses, and that no other buildings burned. The loss ia betw een $4, ("00 and $5,000, and Ml covered by insurance. Tim tire was discovered about 8 :S5 Wednesday morning, and it is not certain whether it was of incendiary origin, or caught from electric wires. There was no person injured, and no outside help was sent for, as it was easily got under control by the hotel force. After the tire the ruins were cleared off, and new buildings, better than those burned, were started on Wednesday evening. The fire did not interfere with business but a few hours, but as there was about 100 guests it the hotel, of course it gave rise to some temporary excitement, which probably accounts for some of the greatly exaggerated reports. anjuNew corn ia selling from wagons at from 45 to 50 cents in Jasper.
