MuMayor Downey, of our neighboring city of Washington, was aroused to a seme of duty by the losses by gambling of Cashier Davis, and haa instructed the police to suppress all forms of gambling, and arrest those engaged in it. The stable i 0. a

aoor was ciosea aner tne norse was stolen. "The election in Indianapolis last Tuesday resulted in a large Republican majority as most Democrats thought it would. The evi

dent goldbug tendencies of the par ty leaders there caused many Dem

ocrats to vote the Republican and Social Labor tickets, and destroyed

all enthusiasm among the Demo

crats, and many of them refrained

from voting. The adoption of the

same policies will result in the same

results at tho more important general elections next year, and should now afford a timely rebuke to such vacillation and point the only way to success for the Democracy. "Truth crushed to Earth will rise again," and the Kansas City platform of 1000 was a righteous one, and should not be dodged or mutilated if success is desirable. The common people everywhere realize this fact now, and the great trusts'

"prosperity" does not relieve them.

Died. Saturday, Oct. 5, 1901, of heart trouble, with which he had been suffering for several months, Mr. Wm. F. Goebel, aged about G5 years. He leaves a widow, but no children. Ue was a distant relative of the late Gov. Goebel, of Kentucky. Two nephews living in Louisville, arrived in Jasper Sunday morning, and took his body to Louisville, where he was bnried in Cave Hill cemetery Tuesday. His widow has the sincere sympathy of a large number of friends in Dubois county. Mr. Goebel traveled for a business house of Louisville for many years, and was acquainted with nearly every merchant in Southern Indiana and Illinois, and his genial disposition made him many friends among them. Some five years ago he got tired of traveling, and located at Portersville, and started a general store, where he was very successful. He came to Jasper about three years ago with his store, and added largely to his stock, but his liberal habits had made inroads on his health, and he was unable to give that close attention to business he otherwise would. His death was a sudden shock to our people, who vainly thought he would get well. Ünbois Circait Coart. The October term begins next Monday, with rather a larger dock

Prison Sunday. The observation of Prison Sun a a a a

uav dv tne cnurcnes oi our land is

bad with increasing interest each

year. Indiana is snaring in this.

Her work in prison reform and the

steps she has taken for the prevention of pauperism and crime lead us to expect that. Last year hundreds

of churches in this State observed the day that has been designated

Prison Sunday, the last Sunday in

October. On it, consiJeration was

given to those things which lead to

crime, as weil as to tne effects of

crime ; to criminals and their treatment; to efforts at reforming the offender and measures for the prevention of crime. In these and kindred topics our people are deeply interested. This year Prison Sunday is October 27th. Several of the district and State meetings of different denominations have adopte.l resolutions requesting their ministers to observe the day. The result will be many other churches will take part in the observance. All those who contemplate doing so are requested to write the Board of State Charities, Indianapolis. Wei. 0. Coffey Accused of Attempted Rape. Wm. Q. Coffey, of the vicinity of Ireland, he of "white cap" fame, is being sought by the officers to answer to a charge of assaul: with intent to rape. The accu sation is made by Miss Ella Smith, of Ireland, who alleges that Coffey broke into her room on Monday nigbt of last week and attempted an assault upon her in the presence of her sisters, her father and brother

being absent at the time. Finding that he was recognized, he abandoned his purpose and made his es
