TBI Coo nt v Fair. The Huntingburg Fair if in full blast this week, but for some cause the show
of stock, fat tu products and ladies
handiwork if not as extensive as
heretofore. Possibly the fear o
diphtheria, which is prevalent in Huntingburg, has deterred many
from exhibiting. The fancy bicy cle riding and the trapeze perform antes, on the inside of the track
are Wi 11 worth seeing, while the
races are not slow for a county fair
On Wednesday the attendance
was not as large as it should be, either. Our people should make
the annual fairs an occasion for
meeting each other from all parts of
the county, a kind of social re
union, and comparing notes of the
year whether they have any ex
hibits or not. This would encour
age the Fair association, and enable it to offer such premiums for home products as would insure good
exhibits.
At the Wednesday's trotting race a serious accident was narrowly
averted. One horse fell down, and
broke the sulky shafts, and the
horse just behind ran over the down
horse, driver and sulky, throwing
the last driver out but he retained
'hold of the lines. Beyond break
ing down botli sulkies no damage
was sustained, but it was a narrow escape. Jas. Lutz Held Upr James Lutz, employed in the marble works of Fred Thorman, had an exciting experience laut Friday night which he would not care to have repeated. He had been to Ireland on business for Mr. Thorman, and in passing through the bottoms, beyond Briarfield bridge on the homeward trip, about 8 o'clock, he was stopped by three men, who demanded his money. He had collected 123 for Mr, Thorman that day, but had taken the precaution to place this, together with his wKfb np-' flu, geat 0f the buggy, i ue robbers went through his pockets and secured for their trouble 00 cents in small change, after which they allowed him to resume his journey, congratulating himself on his lucky escape. Huntingburg News." bherman Kellams and another man had a like experience a short time thereafter, at the same place; but being more plucky they shot at the robbers, and think that one of them was hit as he was seen to fall by the roadside in some bushes and the other robber took to his heels.
Prof. F. B. Kepner, the new Superintendent of Schools, is in the i it y ready to assume his duties cn the opening of schools Monday, Sept. 8ft, Prof. Kepner is making a most iavorable impression among our pqpple. Huntingburg Independent.

Psrtenbeimer-Maul. News: Many persons in this city have received invitations to attend the wedding of Miss Matilda D. Partenheimer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Partenheimer, Sr., of Bretzville, to Rev. (leorge C. Maul, of Lawrenceburg, whbh will take place in St. John's church at Bretzville, Sept, 2"), at 4 o'clock p. m. The News desires to join with their many friends in congratulations. The Cot RiER joins in congratulations. It is rumored that some of Jasper's fair one's thought they might capture the preacher, but failed to "hit the mark!" Qoae to Princeton. Miss Helen Roge, of Ireland, has been selected by the school board of Princeton as one of their corps of teachers for the coming winter. They have made no mistake in the selection of Miss Rose as she is a young lady of culture and refinement well fitted for most any work in educational circles having had experience in both grade and district school work beside several years' work in the Noblesville high school. She is a graduate of Indiana ( Diversity and took a postgraduate course in that institution in literature. Argus. At the present conference a new presiding elder will be appointed for the New Albany district. Since the death of Dr. J. E. Steele, Rev. Dr. McK. Hestar has been acting presiding elder. Ii is thought that Dr. Poucher, for many years professor of theology at Perauw" University, will be Dr. Steele's successor. Courtney Miller, of Corydon,
is the delegate for this district.
