The Reives Trial. On the calling of 'he n-t':i; iin-t John and Lieore Reeves :al week before Judge Ely, the death of (ieorpe wa- sugeted. T!ie defense then piited John w:is insane, and a committee of three physician was appointed to examine him. and they afterwards rejorted under oath that he was not insane. The defense then moved for a chsjBgt f venue from Dubois county on account nf the prejudice exi-ting, and the motion was taken under advise ment. On Monday morning. Judge Ely granted a change from the eountv on the indictment charging mur

der in the ti.st degree, MM ent it to

Gibson county for trial. On the indictment charging murder in the stcond degree the cour. determined to hear evidence, and six citizens swore they believed a prejudice existed which would prevent a fair trial, but tifty-two from Patoka township j ined in one affidavit that they knew of no prejudice existing in that locality; 25 citizens of Jasper also testified the same way, and ten others from ten different portion of Dubois county swore there was an entire absence of prej idice in their localities. I'nder these circumstances and evidence the Judge overruled the raotiou for a change of venue frcm Dubois county upon this indict

ment, and ordered that the trial should tegin on Tuesday, to which the defendant excepted. Because Judge Ely overruled that motion Mil burn A Sweeney had the defendant to swear for a change of vmue against the Judge. Of cour, this was granted, though no one believed the charge, but a Judge never wants to try a case when either party swears to his being prejudiced. Judge Welborn was then telephoned for to try the cast, but he answered he could not come, and upon agreement Hon. Thus. Duncan, of Gibson county, was appointed special Judge to try the case, and arrived in Jasper Tuesday morning. A real estate case, brought here from spencer county, was on trial, and the Reeves case was laid oer till 1 :80 in toe afternoon. Upon assembling at 1 :9Q the defendant's attorneys made several motions to quash, which were overruled, and the work of selecting a jury was begun, which took two hours, until 4 o'clock. Thirty-one persons were examined before the defense accepted the jury, arid then the following excellent jury wa sworn to try the case. The fact that so good a jury was selected, and that in two hours' time, showed that Judge Ely was right in refusing to grant a change of venue from the county. The jurors are all farmers, and are all from Madison township but two. Trial Jirors. Howard VVhitset Madison Tp. Jacob Hoffman Madison. J. O. Norman Madison. VV. V. Anderson Boone. H. Cox made the opening statement for the State, occupying about half an hour. He told the story of the crime in a thrilling manner, and turning to John Beeves said the State would prove that man was one of the guilty murderers. The State's witnesses wee called, and attachments ordered for several who were not present, and court adjourned. Wednesday Sheriff Manion and deputy Satte i field, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, testified that they arrested John and George Reeve- in Illinois, and took them to the Kentucky penitentiary, and that the Reeves men did not then deny their identity, but claimed that they had never been in Dubois county, and did not want tobe brought here. Johiel Vowell and George Hubster swore to knowing the Reevemen, that the prisoner was one of them, that thy had seen them coming irorn toward Jasper the day of the murder. Mrs. Ferrebach t e-ti -fied that she had seen them and Gardner and Cox ride by her re-i-dence the day of the murder, that she heard loud talking, and saw three men trying to tret a uistol
