Well, there has al-av-ben a .-urprise. s mething that 1 had riot thought Of. I have rad si re read th urlrie and contents id all your lelter, and while the joy they haveafforded me i- ii dcrit nble, notwithstanding all that, there baa been something lacking in tfji h one of them tha has iieen a disapKintment to me. Some one has -aid that our livs :ire in .de up of difaKiutment.-. And agaiu oui lives are ahat we make them. The Riblc nays we hall reap a we have soan. Tut hday evening we all went down tograndpa,t and returned Wfdner-day evening. How beautiful and yet how sad to see the dear old man, with his lient form and hoary hair and beard, and hear him ay over and ovet again, "my body mill soon te laid awav to return to dust ; but my s-pirit will take its flihtw ULto Got!" And he said, "how true il is", that e aie once a man and twice a child." He has passd the Spring of childhood, the Summer of youth, the Autu.i n of middle age, and now dines last the Winier of old age. What a tit emblem Winter is of old age. lear Frank, he has come down to the bank of the river, and he caa scarcely wait until the angels will bear him to the other -ide. to strike glad hands with tie loeed ones that have gone before. What bright and glorious hopes the Christian has beyond the grave, but alas! how dark and glocmy all U for the poor sinter who has not a spark of hope. lear Frank, it -eems increditable that we will ever grow old and Kofirsi; th: t our hair should ever be interspersed with silver threads ; that our light and athletic stt p shculd ever be slow and weak. But if we live, all these changes will lake place in a -eemingly very r-hort time. Dear Frank, this his been a -ui erb day. Soon ater dinner 1 made my afternoon toilet, took your last letter and started out for a walk in order that I might read it again. I .-trolled up th? mad for about half a mile and sat down bv a large tiee and read it, and t! en came to the horn- and put it away, ar d then went up to F.va s and we took a long walk. Last night I spoke my piece at the entertainment ai d got through with it all right. I was almost afraid t undertake it, as I had not practiced it tor four long days. 1 wa -kk yesterday and 'lid not feel like ?j-eakirg, but they would not let me off, but told me to do just the bet I cou!J. I gut through letter than I thought i would, and received juite a number of compliments. Dear Frank, this is a mo.-t glorious night. The silvery ru on i- wending her slow and peaceful way across the sky and casting a flood of light over our tranquil little village, and bediming the sparkling gems that glitter and adorn the azure curtains of night. I am wondering where you are about this time, and what you are doing. I aish we were tog ther. When you come to see me, (if you ever Jo) I shall introduce you t: all of my gentlemen and lady Iriends. I want you t meet them all. There are very few young men here that come up to my ideal -tandard of what a young man should be. This morning I arose early and got my work done in time to go .o Sunday School and church. I spoke in Sunday School and have been happy all day. After supper I went 1 1 church with Mr. George Davis; after church he came in and stayl about lö minutes and then went home. And I MM glad of it, as I wanted to write you. I intended to write yesterday, but I wa-n't feeling well, but I am all right now. I don't know about the force pumptreatmrnt you speak of as I don't think Mr. D. believes that I have a fellow away from here. How ni:e it sounds lo me to talk about my fKLLOW. You are mure than my fellow, you are my lover, ar n't you, dear Frank.' Love is the light, the majesty of life. Lite without love is worse than death ; a world without a sun. A writer somewhere has said: "Man is a creature of interest and ambition. His nature leads him forth in the struggle and bustle of the world. Love is but the t iiihelli-ihment of his early life, or a song piped into the intervals of the act. He seeks for fame, fortune or a space in the world's thought, and dominion over his fellowmen. But woman's whole life is a history of affection. The heart is her world; it is there her ambition strives for empire, it is there her ambition seeks for hidden treasure. She embarks her whole soul in the traflic cf affection, and if shipwrecked her case is hopeless, for it is bankruptcy of the heart." "Man's love is of man's life a thing opoft. 'Tis woman's whole existence,'' so the poet says. 1 think woman s love when once aw-ikened is stronger than a man's. But why shouldn'tit be, she is dependent, and what would become of her if there was not some irrei-tible enchantment about her nature. Look at some of the great men of the age that have climbed the scala iatellectus, and won the scepter of renown. Trace his career back to his early life and see what sort of a mother or wife he was influenced by. The great men have had great mothers or wives, without which their lives would ierha-s have been very insignificant. Well, I had thought of quite a good dal more to say, but I cannot think what it is now. Well, dear !, I will have to i!oe. Take good care of yourself and be a trood boy. Write soon. I will close by wishing you sweet and calm reprise, half the bed and all the clothes, as the old saying goes. Ha' ha! Uood night, dear Frank. From your sincere little girl, Lnxts. (To be continued.)
