THE LOVE LETTERS OP AN IRISH LASSIE. (All Rights Ueierved LITTKB BIVBN. Ikelanu, Jan. 0, 19 DsUtaWI Frank : Your kind letter of the 31st inst. came to hand yesterday morning and was highly appreciated, liku they always are. i liursday before New Year's papa gave a turkey dinner to a number of his friends, and it kept us pretty busy all day; after supper Eva came up and we thought we would have a pleasant evening talking of the old year, all alone. We were just having a Hplendid time when all of a sudden some one knocked, I went to the door and found Mr. Edward Woods; he bad scarcely been seated until some one else knocked, this time I found Mr. Robert Murray. Both were very unexpected calleis. Mr. Woods is a very handsome young man; fair complexion, light hair and tysbfOWl and the lovliest bUck eyes. Mr. Murray reminds me of you ; he is- a perfect blond ; he was my partner. I OOUid not help thinking of you every time his name was spoken. My mind whs wandering to you, and several times I was caught looking at the lire absent-mindedly, and they said, "a penny for your thoughts, LUlie." "Ugh," I said, "it would take a good many pennies to get my thoughts." They stayed until 11 o'clock, Then I thought 1 would see the dear old year die all alone. I always love to lock my door upon the real world, and HDD! the poitals of my fairy palac 1 my thought realm. Everything was as still ai death, except the old clock that has tolled thfl deatti of so many years. The wind moaned through the trees and around the house, as if weeping for the departing vear. I sat pondering over your lett r until I was m absorbed in it that I forgot evervthing until the striking of the clock aroused me. 1 wondered what you was doing; and on receiving your last letter I learned that yon was writing to me. Ye.-, dear Frank, all the unpleasant past wa- buried last Thursday evening; so you must burn that old d'sagreeahle letter. Don't be afrai 1 of my not keeping your letters. I have them all and often read them over. Dear Frank, it does seem so strange that you wns so forcibly impressed that the time for acting had come, as to rise in the night and write to me. It seems to me tl at the guardian angel that I had prayed to, to watch over you, must have forewarned you of your fate. I know that my conscience directs me so often to do something or not to do it, that 1 am absolutely afraid to resist. Dear Frank, it is truly like a dream to me, that you love me so dearly and that you have loved me so long. It was last summer that I made up my mind to wiite to you again whether 1 ever heard from you or not; but truly, when I wrote I never thought of us being more to each other than we ever was. Dear boy, I know it must be very disagreeable to love and not be loved in return J but I have made up my mind if it is possible, and God's will, I will give you my love. I always thought I would never want a young man to love me if I could help it, unless I had an inclination to love him; and I accept your love with many thanks, and only hope to be able to give you ray heart in return. Frank, of course, you have considered the seriousness cf the question you have been writing to me? I am overcome with joy, dear Frank, when I think that such a brilliant, enterprising, energetic and gallant young man as you have paid me the vkhy HIOBBST compliment in his power, i. e., to give me his love. Love! Yes, love. h, how much meaning there is in that little, yet the most beautiful of all word.-; and how much joy and happiness it spells for me, will take time to tell. Dear Frank, I find it will be a little diflicult for me to send Mr. Davis away immediately; but I will just as soon as pos-i-hle ; and of course, 1 will tell you. 1 will tell you of an occurrence with Mr. D. and I. and you cuu judge from it my opinion of caressing and kissing. Last June he asked me if I would like to go over to H , a distance of ten miles, to a commencement exercise. There were two other couplts going, and we were to start at ?ix o'clock. At I lie appointed time he drove up to my home in a little phaeton and with the lovliest lit le horse; I was ready, and so we started. We had a very nice time going over and at the commencement, and about twelve we started for home. We had not gone very far until he complained of his ahm BEUtO M HMD. I knew what he meant and said : "I'm so sorry," then he wanted to rest his arm on the back of the seat, but I said "no!" very short and emphatically. It made him very indignant at me. He said, "he was not used to being cut off so short." At the time I did not know that I spoke so short and quick, although I meant what I said; well, we rode half of the way home before either of us sp-)ke. I was so full of laugh that I could hardly keepftom laughing out. Well, at last he broke the silence, saying: "He would never come to see mi any more; and that is twice I've sworn never to put ray foot into your door?" I said, "all right, Mr. Davis, it don't make any difference to me whether you ever step in my door again or not; I suppose I am to understand that you are mad at me because 1 would not grant that wish." He said that I was to understand that he was not used to being spoken to in such a short, crabbed way. I said, "perhaps you are not used to being spoken to at all, but to having your wish granted without any words about it. lint you have found a new person to deal with when you found me, and you will see the day when you'll say that I am right." I never dismissed a gentleman at my door as coolly in ray lifo as I did him that night. The next day I received a note from him stating that he had reconsidered the matter, and I was in the right and he in the wrong. Ho was very humble. Ha! ha! now, dear Frank; I have taken entirely too much room for that 1 it tlo anecdote; I think there are very few young men can say that they never kissed a girl outside of their relatives. I think you are just right about ruch matters. I think there is only one who is entitled to that pleasure and that is your betrothed. In that not right? Frank, you are the only one that I ever told about Mr. D. Did you tell Miss L. that you would not call on her eny more; and would you mind telling me her answer or what she said? Dear Frank, I cannot tell you now why 1 was glad that you loved me, but I will try and tell you sometime. Many thanks for your kind wishes. May (tod bless you in all your hopes, prospect, habits, desires and resolutions. I haven't time tonight to tell yoi. of all my hopes, wishes, joys and sorrows, but vill Home other time. Well, dear, noble Frank, I must close, wi-bing you a sweet good night. Your devoted little girl, Lillian. P. S. Write real soon, I'll look for a letter Tuesday. Ciood night. Lillik.
