Jasper Democratic Primary

The voters of Jasper are hereby

notified that the Democratic rri

marv Election will be held at the

olHee of the Jasper Electric flight

Co., on L. 0th street, on

TUESDAY, MARCH 19th, 1901,

beginning at 1 o'clock, p. m. for

the purpose of nominating: One Trustee for the 1st ward; One Trustee for the 2d ward ; One Trustee for the 4th ward; One Town Marshal ; One Town Clerk; One Town Treasurer:

For said town, to be voted for at

regular May election. The primary election will be held by ballot. Joseph F. Friedman, Andrew Krem it, Geo. V (Jramelspacher, Precinct committeemen. GaTMr. John H. Judy announces himself as a candidate far re-election as Town Clerk. He has madt an efficient officer during his past term and if re-f lected his part of the town business will be well look ed after.

School Lecturer. Mr. Snyder, a traveling .Swede lecturer, delivered an interesting and instructive lecture before the Jasper schools this week, on Switzerland, its gjv ernment, the manners and customs of its people, etc. fcrMr. Kdward (Butzweiler is announced in this week's CoruiKKas a candidate for re-election as Town Marshal. Mr Gutzweiler has made a very creditable officer during the past year and, if successful in the coming primaiv. will no doubt make a good officer. 1Ä-The call for the Jasper Democratic primary will be found in this issue of the Courier. Now let the candidates pile in their announcements. Good men should be nominated for each of the offices men who manage their own affairs well, and the Courier would like to fill a column with names of this kind at $1 each. Bring 'em in. BTvJoeh Winchester, as presented by the C. E. Dramatic club at Kastner's Opera house, on last Friday evening, was highly appreciated by a large and appreciative audience. The parts were all well rendered by the local atari and frequent was the applause they received. They will produc the play at several neighboring towns as noted in another column.

New Firm. Mr. Wm. Hüls and Mr. Conrad Prechtel have formed a partnership to deal in all kinds of country produce, and have opened business in the Prechtel building on 6th street a convenient location. Mr. Wm. Haller sold them their first case of eggs Saturday last. As they are both well known and energetic they will certainly get a fair share of the produce business. Head End Collision. As the afternoon train, from Jasper to Huntinghurg was going through the yards at Huntinghurg on last Monday it was run into by a freight train. No one was hurt and little damage asside from that done to the engines resulted. As far as learned no one was found responsible for the occurrence.

Washington, D, C, Feb. 25, "01, Credit will be due to democrat! ii congress for whatever reduction of war taxes the country gel. The republicans fully intended to kill the bill in conference, but when they found out that all of the democratsin lb" House, und euough re publicans to uiak" a majority , were determined to head off that scheme, the leader at once ordered that a compromise be patched up in con

ference between the House and Hen

ate bills. That compromise will not, of course, in any sense, be I democratic measute, but it will make some reduction in war taxes that would not have been made, if

the democrats ha 1 been less ag gressive. Senator Morgan, in the minority report of the committee on Foreign Relations on the resolution declaring that the ratification of the HayPauneefote treaty is not a condition precedent to the construction of the Nicaragua canal, and that the lT. S boald proceed with that work regardless of the Clayton-Rulwei agreement, which was adversely reported by a party vote, makes the positive chaige that Mr. McKinley caused the resolution to be adversely reported. Concerning the inllotnce

of Mr. McKinley with the republican members of the committee, aod his right to say what is expedient for them to do, Senator Morgan said: "This claim was made in the committee, and his (Mr. lie Kinley's) views as to the expediency of action were stated as grounds of objection to the resolutions.

From this view of the duty

Senate, I wholly dissent." Main

republican senators who have

claimed to be for the Nicaragua ca

nal are now under suspicion. The

claim that action on any legislation, relating to the Nicaragua canal

while the Hay-Pauncefote treaty is pending would be discourteous to

Fingland, is a very plausible bluff,

but still a bluff. It has been suc

cessfully used to prevent action at this session of congress. The Panama i anal lobby is trying to do the rest. Its latest and most important

recruit is a member of the cabinet

of Colombia, who is now in Wash

ington, seeking to transfer Colom

bia's interest in the Panama canal to the U. S. government. It is not

surprising that ugly stones should

be in circulation concerning this canal business. Senator Morgan stirred up the republicans by openly charging them with having in

tended from the first to kill the ic a e m .

aragua canal bill, saying oi tnem

and their tactics: "These men are

willing to be kicked and cuffed

about by King Edward VII, and are kneeling to his every whim. They do not believe the P. S. has any rights unless Great Britain says so. I know that the canal bill was used to influence the election of Mr.

McKinley, the republicans knowing f

all the time that their

were to defeat it in the Senate
