You will scarcely understand the Inlenee Intertet of tills Int rvlew until it is explained that this Krult-Urowinjf Association practices fruit culture in two ways, wall-culture and cultivating ur.cier glass (I forego Cr n. Ii designations). The out-door cultivation of fruit In France is extra-t.uzai lious and is fast being huperseded b the artificial rr.. ins of wall and glas.". The sent lernen who were here yt terday explained that the most profitable cultivation was thi.t vvhin;n all th. lactors of success were in the hands of the cultivator. I have used this argument manv times for the promc Ion of the policy o: Irrigation. I Save said that whin the moisture 1 oi be control. ;. I tfa with reference to moisture and dialnage, civilised culture wUl haw ben achieved; that at that point only It becomes an art; hut where natural conditions are depcndd upon and are not uiu'a r the control of man, the cultivation has not risen to the dignity of an art. its main factors are at tl..- hazard of chance. When I explained, however, the conditions urah r which fruit was "..wn In California, it became apparent both to myself nnd my auditors, that the natural conditions In California are as nearly perfect for the production of fruit as it Is possible to be, and that at all vents thvre are economl. s with us which will give at the fruit markets of the world. You may accept this conclusion as demrrstratnl bv our exhibit ar.d ol.s. rvatlon here. California Is hereafter to be the ort hard of the world, for reasons which will be more easily made typt TS Bt Ina personal Interview. The reason for the foregoing narration I will imw present: Wi had xhaustd the interest of the txhibit In showing the fruits, the pineapples, the SSti ÜW prunes, the peaches, the pears, the apples, the vegetables in all their varieties, etc. The day was extremely hot and the Interview had become monotonous. 1 called the company into an attitude In which thev could get a good view of the panorama of the Kreat tree grove. I have never heard more genuine expressions of surprise and admiration. The President of the Association, a man of fine mentality and dlRnlty of character, said, through the interpreter to me. that the picture was the most beautiful presentation of a forest he had ever seen and the forest was the most beautiful of any that had ever been shown abroad. The forest as expressed in that pic'ure Is infinitely superior to any forestry expression possible nere. The largest pine tree I raw in Oermanv was less than twenty-four Inches in diameter, and not to exceed seventy-flve or elghtv feet high After what we had told them of the favoring conditions of climate and soil, we introduced them into the heart of one of our greatest forests by the best representation which can he piaced upon paper. Y'ou can have no adequate conception of how it broadened and dignified and ennobled our State. We had shown them panorama pictures, pictures of prune orchards in bloom, pictures of orchards, one of which Is a most marvelous presentation, the paBoran 1 Itself being six feet by fourteen Inches high, and representing five hun lr-d acres of prune orchard We had shown them twentv-ore square miles in one panorama of a fruit orchard In Vaei-. Vall y W e had shown thfn large fruit- nn.1 l ire.- c . tables, and all thex things had api-i .: d to them as exceptional. The panorama of the great forests of California.
