their business unprofitable, and thus ultimately control the finances and welfare of all the jieople at its
pleasure, and thus become dangerous to liberty in political action. "Kternal vigilance is the price of liberty," as well now as in Patrick Henry's time. He, also, thoroughly discussed the Spanish war policy, showing that much suffering and deaths t i .
among our Drave volunteers, was caused by the appointment of incompetent politicians as quartermasters, inspectors, surgeons, etc., by President McKinley e.nd Sec'y Alger, and spoke feelingly of tue homes rendered desolate by these incompetents. He also dwelt upon th vacillating, hesitating policy of the Republican party as to the tinal results of the war, and the evident wish of Hanna to aid the Spanish bondholders to secure the endorsement f the United States for the payment of the londs issued by Spain to obtain means for murdering the Cubans, who were bravely battling for hutua.i rights and their liberties. If Judge Zenor'n speech could have been heard by every voter in the county, Dubois would give "2,000 Democratic majority next

The meeting will be held at Kr Kiel's Hall. On Friday November 4th, 189, at 7 o'clock, P. M., Frank L. Betz, of Jasper, Ind., Capt. Philip A. Guckes, democratic candidate for Coroner, and Capt. Chairman. John E. McFai.l, Secretary. An Abie Arfaaeat. Hon. W. T. Zenor's speech at the Court house Tuesday night, was listened to by room full of people, and was a very able presentation of
the position of the Democratic par ty in the present canvass. His exposition of the money question was full and convincing, showing the great advantages that would accrue to the masses by the free coinage of silver at 16 to 1, and the disasters sure to follow the Republican prom ised enforcement of the single gold standard as now openly advocated by that party. He also discussed the banking bill now before congress, and which will be rushed through the coming
winter, should the Republicans sue-

Visit to Dubois Couaty of Projectors. The chief engineer of the Indiana division of the Black Diamond, Mr. Watt, accompanied byother otl'u ers of the enterprise, and also by Sir Thomas Tancred, engineer, and representative of London, England capitalists who are investigating the line as one for investment f securities, are expected in Jasper to day. Our citizens should extend them a cordial welcome, as sin uld the line be built as contemplated it will be one that will be of great benefit to Indiana, and locally to Dubois county and Jasper. It would give us a competing line of railroad, and thereby an opportunity to secure the location here of large manufacturing establishments, which are seeking desirable places, and which
cannot be induced to locate where there is but one railroad as a means
of transportation of products to the world. Its completion would also place us on one of the greatest thorough
fares of America, destined to do an
immense business, and develop the resources of the country all along its line, adding to the population and general prosperity incident always to such increases. The tendency in the past has been to build trunk lines east and west, but it is to be broken by the Black Diamond road, which is to be built from Port Royal, S. C, to
Chicago, 111., and probably far be
yond. The road is not a new idea. It originated with J. C. Calhoun in 1S30. Over $2,000,000 was spent on the enterprise prior to the war, upon the portion of the projected line between Charleston and Cincinnati, and there has of late been spent $200,000 in surveys. The line as now located runs through the rich coal fields of southeastern Kentucky, the Knoxville, Tenn., marble quarries, and through the -late quarries at the head of the Little Tennessee river, and the best coal fields and timber lands in In
diana. Parties interested in the enterprise are determined to build the read, and the report of Thomas Tancred, the English engineer, will tie such as to make the English
capitalists who are behind the project willing to advance the money
needed to build and properly equip
the line. As now projected bv
Mr. Boone, the road will be 1,249
miles in Ungth, and it is estimated
will cost $40,000,000. PREACHER OUT OF PRISON.

The 8 uthern states are said to be taking more interest in the Black Diamond system of railways than are the Northern states tr rough which it will run. The English syndicate received much encouragement in Kentucky and those por lions f the Virginias and Caiolinas it will strike. Its projectors say it will Ouch the Atlantic seaboard at three points Port Royal, 8. C, Charleston, S. C. and Savannah, Gift., and construction on the line will not stop until it has its own load into Pittsburg, Wheeling, Columbus, Indianapolis, Peoria, Louisville, Cincinnati, Chicago, Fargo and Moorhead.-Evansville Courier.
