The reports show that in a great many cases it w as ditlicult to tell that anything was the matter with tluiu. Only ten per cent, of the cases of sickness from this regiment were reported as in any way serious, and when it was rumored that the reg-iiuenl was to be aonl home, several of those in the hospital asked not to be sent, but to be ullOWSd to remain throughout their convalescence. The report states that in times when the hospital was crowded there was a lack of nuraes, the deticiency bciii(f supplied by Uetails from the regiments, which were not as satisfactory us trained nurses. "As a result of this inadequate force, says the report, "the force r.ovided has been hard woriicd. bur m all cases they have stuck to their posts and performed their work with great energy, until sickness overtook a considerable OS labor. The places of the sick have been tiled by nurses from the surgeon-general s department. The exhausting character of the work performed by these nurses is shown by the fa. t that about ouc-fouth of them have thoroughly exhausted their strength and are now resting in quarters. lien. In the maliguaut typhoid ward there have been bu: two deaths out of
cases in three weeks, lie says that both the medical othcers aud the hospital attendants at this hospital have undoubtedly performed their duty with energy und erliciency, aud the best test of all this is shown by the fact that so many of them have thoroughly exhausted them, elves and fallen sick under their labors. It is also true that many of them have continued to work after they had been pronounced sick. The report continues at great length to siiow the clean and commendable condition of the hospitals and the hospital service, aud then takes up the adverse report of (Jen. Terry, and shows that it is false and wickedly mish ading in almost every particular and wholly unworthy of belief.
