Admiral Pew. v and Gen.
Merritt captured Manilla after a sharpengagement lasting two hours, a day before he got the new of peace negotiations and the u--pension of hostilities. The American loss was eicht of Menitt's force killed, and 84 wounded, and no casualities in the navy. (.'apt. (Jen. Augustin escaped to Hong Kong on the Ciermn naval cruiser Kaiserin. A to the capture of Manilla Admiral Dewey said he could dewit in two hours any time, and the result showed he knew how to dewit. Hurra for Pewey ! Money Stolk.v Mrs. M. Demuth, of St. Anthony, stepped out of her house to visit a store a few minutes on Tuesday, leaving 84 tied in h hfir.dkeichief on I cupboard shelf. When she got back tha money was gone, and she immediately inquired of some of the neighbors if thev had seen any one at her house. They told her that Dave Leiter, who served a term in the State's prison from this county, and had been out but a short time, came from her door but a few moments before. She sent for her son, and he mounted a horse and started after Leiter, and as soon as he got in sight of him Leiter, took to the underbrush. Neighbors went to hunting for him, but at this writing without success. Supposed Horse Thikk. On Friday last a Mr. OscarSchmidt, ot Princeton, a former son-in-law of Mr. Wm. Zehr, of Hall township, but who has been living apart from his wife for several months, called at Vollmer k (ierber's livery stable and got a horse and buggy to go to Celestine to see his wife. He came back Saturday, but too Ute to connect with the R. K. train, and when he learned that he obtained the horse and buggy again to go to Celestine, promising to return the next morning. He didn't get back Sunday, and has not got back yet, but Mr. Koerner, of Birdseye, says he was seen going through Birdseye Sunday, and that he told that he was on his way to Corydon, and from there to New Albany. On Monday Marshal Milburn went to
Corydon, but obtained no ttace of
him or the horse and buggy. It is now supposed he went to Kentucky with them. Co itnct Let Corner Stone Laving. The trustees of Trinity church have decided to lay the corner stone of the new church on Thursday
September 1st, at U o'clock in the morning. Addresses will be made
by the following ministers: (L A
Kienle, of Huntingburg, T. C. Ash-
burn, of Kvansville, S. John, of
Kvansville. C. K. Pitt, of Oakland
City, J.I. Gregory, of Ireland, and G. C. Cooper, of Otwell. The putting in of the stone foundation was let on Saturday night to Wm. T. Hüls of this place for $413, he being the lowest bidder. The following were the bidKkick. A. M. Hochgesang, $5o; A. Schlessing, $670; M. F. Durlauf, 1660. Stone. Hen Schroede- I !'-: W. T. Hüls $413. Mr. Hüls has contracted with
Ben. Schroeder to deliver the needed stone, and the work of getting it on the ground has begun. Firk. On Saturday, alut 11 o'clock, the house of George Huber, about one-fourth of a mile north of Jasper, was destroyed by fire. It is supposed to have caught from a defective flue. Mr. ÜVDM was not at home, being absent working with a thresher, and his wife did not discover the fire until the roof was all ablaze. Some of the nearest neighbors got there in time to help save most of the furniture. The loss is probably $350 or $4K), and ' a very heavy one for him, as it was not insured. MTA pleasant social was had at the home of Mr. Alois Beiter, on Wednesday night, the occasion being the first anniversary of his marriage.
