Notwithstanding the active opposition. heretofore manife-ted, of a candidate for a county otlice, B"hoefi interests are not in the wellfare of of Jasper, or of an independent railroad through the county, the Cor kikk hopes the Black Diamond railroad may soon connect the northern and western portions of the county with the vast railway systems of the country. aTTt seems to the CoUMJKI the acme of imbecility to report as a scare-crow in the Democra'ic primary that Mr. I. Schumacher is looking after a deputy auditor's position. All who are acquainted

with his pecuniary interests and business interests know he could not afford it. As well report that Henrv Landgrebe, K. W. Pickhardt, W. R. McMahrm, H. Rothert, J. G. Ueckman, Jos. E. Buchart, W. A. Traylor, F. Joseph, J. Burger, Jr , J. Gramraelspacher, S Kuebler, A. Sonderman, Andiew Eckert, W. S. Hunter, Dr. J. P. Salb, or any one of 50 others of the principal business men of Dubois County were seeking deputyships. They could not afford to give up their personal business for any deputy's position. Cheaper men must be sought for such positions.

Ire-

ceeding years may be so beneficial

and successful.

Dubois Circuit Court Begins next Monday with comparatively a comparatively light doc ket. There are but 29 State cases in which the defendants have been arrested, and 17 of those are for violations of the liquor laws. The follawing comprises the State

docket at present

in the communi

cation on first page of Courier from "Citizen" the question is asked "Why did Mr. Koerner reduce the assessment of the Jasper Furniture Company from $18,000 to 12,000f The editor of the CotJBHU did not have his attention called to the item until printed, and upon investigation finds that the assessor in the year 18, in the assessor's books, shows the assessment of the Jasper Furniture Co. at 12,o00, and realestate 18,980, making a total of 19,580. In making up the tax duplicate the auditor chose to treat this as an error of the assessor, and reduced the assessment to $12,X). The editor of the Coikikk desires to be perfectly fair in this matter, and the Auditor may have really thought there was a mistake as the assessment had been $12,000 since 1893, although constant improvements in the property have been added since that time, including some additional new machinery. The editor wishes all correspondents would be a .-curate when giving figures particularly when it concerns public officers. The enterprising and wealthy propriet rs of the Desk Co. have been a great help to the business interests of Jasper, and it is to be regretted that the manager thereof should have feit called upon to engage in a local politic al squabble, on account of

suspicions winch are sure to arise therefrom. "We understand that Mr. Koerner stated last Sunday at Schnell ville that Mr. Sweeney was not a good Democrat and that he (Koerner) could not get Mr. Sweeney to make a single Democratic speech in Dubois cou.ity during the last campaign. If Mr. Koerner stated this he knew the statement was false, as he himself introduced him at a speech at Duff, heard him speak at Huntingburg, and teje-1-honed him while he was speaking at Dttboif. Notwithstanding Mr. Sweeney was sick during the greater part of the campaign he made

over a dozen speeches in the countv. 2: for maintenence 1

Literary programs are leing prepared in the different rooms for the .ast day's exercises. The teachers would appreciate a liberal attendance of the patrons on the afternoon of the last day of school, which will be March 22. Miss Gussie Clark will be the first graduate from the four years'

The entire new course of study will be put in at the opening of next year, if jossible to have it coinple'ely arranged by that time. The Jasper Schools have done a remarkably good and lOOONtfa year's work with the school year so soon to close. The teachers throughout have co-operated harmo

they should be run; in his good, jolly, gentlemanly way, and we rjonbt whether he will scarcely know that he has an opponent in the primary, only as one of the King passes, making a despai ing attempt to yell for "Koerner, King Kule and Bossism." Ireland and Madison township are radical for Sweeney, and well they may be, for he is the pride of the county ; ii deed we may say that he is one of the prides of the State, for he is pretty well known all over Hoosier dorn. At the bar he is silvertongued, and eloquent and true to his client; as a candidate for the nomination of Lieut nent Jovernor, he was popular, and came within

a few votes of receiving the nomination ; as State Senator he was a success, and a favorite with all, and as a candidate for the nomination ft r Auditor the voters will not be t irdv in their appearance for him, and his nomination will be Motived by the common people, who will stand by him equally as firm in the lection.
