EDUCATIONAL COLUMN. Edited by K. F. 8 vth island, Superintendent Jaapr Schools Introductory. The editor of the Courier has kindly placed at our command a column for educational purposes, for which in the beginning, we wish to thank him. We take upon ourselves this extra duty in behalf of the interest we feel in education. It seems to us that a column properly conducted will stimulate school interests in any county, particular
ly so in a town the size of Jasper, and finally subserve a piactically good end. In that direction the editor will lend his every energy. This column is intended, first, to promote the immediate interests of the Jasper schools, and secondly, those of Dubois county and the
educational world in general. Through this medium the patrons
and friends of our schools will learn of their true standing and condition,
and of their regulations and re
quirements. A complete report of all the schools will be published
monthly. We invite a careful reading of it, and solicit a hearty co oper
ation of the patrons to improve it
if possible.
V e invite the correspondence of
the teachers of Dubois County. We wish to know what they are doing
and how they are doing it. Like
wise their contemporaries like to
read of their success, and manage
ment of school affairs, and to hear
suggestions for their own improvement. Anything of school news,
or pertaining to the helpfulness of the country schools will be accorded space in proportion as we can spare it.
With this brief explanation, and
asking the intelligent indulgence and support of the educational public, we begin the issue of this de
partment of the Courier, we trmt,
in tue mutual interests, of sreat
good.

SBTThe evidence in the applict-
tion of C Doane for an injunction
against the town trustees of Jasper,
to restrain them from attempting to
extend 5th street, was heard by
Judge My, at Petersburg, on Monday, and taken under advisement,
with orders to the President of the trustees that nothing should be
done in the matter until the case should be decided. The expense to the town of this suit wculd have
been saved if the agreement by the town attorney at the Oct. term of
the Dubois Circuit Court had been
adhered to by the town board.

She says they were engaged to be married. The developments have1
caused considerable excitement. Professor H. W. Wiley, chief of the division of chemicals of the department of agriculture, has been persuing a line of investigation on the subject of beet culture in the West, and in a letter to Senator Fairbanks on the subject he writes : "I am fully convinced that there are many localities in Indiana which have advantages equal if not superior to any parts of this country, outside of the irrigated areas aal some points on the Pacific coast, for the cultivation and production of the lugar beet. Indiana ought to look forward to making at least all the sugar she consumes, and this is not only a possible but probable outcome of the investigations which are now making in this line of r gricul tural progress. ' 1 The farmers of Indiana have been told that they have an excellent soil and climate for raising sugar beets, and thelconcluskm reached by Professor Wiley is strong confirmation of the opinions previously entertained,
