Extracta Iron by Electricity. The Electric Engineer of Oct. 2!), publishes the first authoritative ac-
' 'unt of Thomas A. Edison's suc- ' ss in recovering by tlectrical means the iron contained in low grade ore. The inventor's experiments have been carried on during the past six years at the old Ogden iron mines, a fuw miles from Dover, N. J., where he has built up a plant
covering several acres of ground, and which, after many exjeriments,
is now capable of producing daily from 1,000 to 1,500 tons of almost chemically pure iron.
I he ore worked contains on the
average about 25 per cent of iron, and resembles in appearance a very
poor quality of gray rock. Mr. Edison states that there are 200,0tX), 000 tons of this ore on the land immediately surrounding his plant, from which can be produced 50,
000, 000 tons of iron.
His process, in brief, consists of blasting the ore from the mountain
sides and then by means of steam shovels and miniature railroad cars
conveying it to the massive crushers,
where it is broken up and passed on to other mills, where it is pulverized. The powder is then allowed to fall in close proximity to electro magnets, which deflects the iron to one side, and the non-metallic matter falls to the other side b? gravity. Erom the time the ore is blasted until it is resolved into this metallic form and compressed into briqnettes for shipment the process is entirely automatic. la Memoriam. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1897, at 4 o'clock A. M., our beloved brother, GatMMM W. Kku.ams, died. He was only sick one week, until he was called away to his eternal home in Heaven. So young to be called away; but God is no respecter of persons. He leaves a wife and broken hearted family, besides his many friends to mourn their loss : Ob! Mary now in lonely, and all the rest left here, Our loved one was called away the one we love I so dear.
The happy home is broken, their dear
ne is gone to rest, And they'll all meet in Heaven, with tbe loving, pure anil blest.
Yes, I know he is safe in Heaven, re
joicing on the shore,
With all tbe bright earth's loved ones,
that tiod has called before.
