sTwenty-three members of Jasper lodge No. 68, A. 0. U. W. attended the A. O. l W. anniversary at Terre Haute Wednesday. Mr. John Heichelbech, of the Union Hotel, is all smiles this week on account of a new boarder at his house. Its a girl, arrived Saturday morning. Mother and all doing well.
ST.Mr. I,on Stutsman while hauling saw logs near Duff Tuesday afternoon was run over bv the wagon loaded with 1 gs. While pretty badly brused up, he is doing a well as could be expected. "Public school children to the number of 103 enjoyed an excursion Saturday, to numerous historical points in Dubois county. The old court house at Portersville was decorated for the occasion and Mr. lioble, the jolly merchant at that place, treated the children to candy on the banks of White river and made them all his everlasting friends.
Insurance Rates Reduced. The insurance rate adjusters have reduced the rates of insurance in Jasper on the streets that are G feet or more in width. This shows t le advantage of having wide streets The rates have been reduced on brick mercantile buildings 15 cents on the $100, and on dwellings 10 cents on the $100.
Engineers have finished a detailed survey of the Ohio river from Pittsburg to Marietta. They find the distance to be 172 miles, and that the river between those points has grown seven-tenths of a mile in length in the last 20 years. They also find that it will take 17 locks and dams to make that part of the river navigable for business the year round. When congress appropriates more money for expenses the survey will be completed to Cairo. It is estimated the improvements contemplated on the entire river will cost $25,00(3,000, and it will then be a competitor the year around with the railroads for business, and a great help to farmers and traders in produce. Monday previous. Ihe loss in
cludes 400 barrels of Hour ready for shipment, about 3000 bushels of
of wheat, and several tons of shorts
and bran. The smell of the burning Hour prev&ded the whole town for several days after the fire, as the
close packing of the Hour when the
barrels burned off prevented watei
trom reaching the tire underneath
for a long time.
I he fire was a very hot one, and
the large frame building scattered sparks for six squares south of it, their being a lignt wind from the
north. The tire department did ex
cellent work in saving surrounding
buildings, several of which were so hot as to smoke several times. The
water works saved at least one-
fourth of their entire cost by keeping other building from taking tire.
It is yet uncertain when the mill
will be rebuilt, but as they were do
ing an excellent business u is thought they will soon be replaced.
Ihe books of the firm were also de
stroyed, and much depends on the
promptness with which debtors pay up to enable the owners t Jgo ahead
again, as the loss is a very heavy one to them. All those who know themselves indebted should settle
now promptly.

fectious diseases were reported for
the quarter. Diphtheria 15 cases. Scarlet Fever 4 cases. Typhoid Fever 15 cases. The fact that diptheria continues
to be so prevalent in this county
proves that the rules and regulations of the Board of Health have been disobeyed and that there has been criminal nenliKence on the part of
physicians and the public.
The spread of diphtheria must be
stopped or else it will tie necessary
to close some of the schools in certain townships. Numerous complaints come to this office. It is said one teacher actually goes from
an infected house (where there is diphtheria) into the school room. There has been several cases of dipbteria and two deaths from some disease that have never been reported to this office. Physicians, school officers, teachers and the public know their duty, for the rules and regulations have been published
time and again, it some one or more should feel the weight of the
law ere long for neglect of duty don't be surprised. B. B. Brannock, M. D., Sec'y Dubois County B. of H. Jasper, Ind., Oct. 25th, 1867.
