Bite Democratic Victory in Indianapolis The election at Indianapolis last
Tuesday wan watched with intereM all over the State, because Senator Fairbanks had published a letter opposing Taggart on account of hiiheing in favor of free silver. The result was a cmplete rout for Republicans. Taggart being elected by over 4, 000 majority, and 18 of the
Jl counc'lmen. 1 He result snows how Fairbanks put his millionaire l.M.t in it, and the Democratic roos ters are crowing for free silver. If Indianapolis will only stick this way now it will be all right next year, when a legislature M to be chosen. aP Butcher Weyler has beei; ordered home from Cuba, but the tight has heen kept up too long to make any thing hört of independence possible in Cuba now. Qeo Blanco has been appointed Captain ;-neral. and will izo to Cuba with
20,000 more Spanish recruits. No d iubt he will prove a blank-o. lb i- billed to leave Spain to-day, or m -metime within a week. W'eylei has probably mad? enough money to live easy the rest of his days. If our government had the independence it had In-fore so ninny eoph became millionaires it would recog nize the independence of the Cuban republic in twenty-four hours, and with the withdrawal thereby of the aid our navy has constantly given Spain, Cuba would drive the Spanish forces from her shores in a few w eeks. It should be done.
The Drouth. Rains and Health. The drouth, which it is to be hoped was permanently broken by the rains of Sunday and Monday, wat the most extensive and severe ever known through the middle and western portion of the United States. It extended from the Rocky Mountains east to Virginia and Pennsylvania, and from the northern chain of lakes to the Gulf In this locality, while there has
heen several KOod showers, th re
has not been rain suflicient to wet
the trround through since the mid
dle of Julv, and it will take several
such rams as the lust to thoroughly
wet it. The Coi kikk last week received a letter from Mr. J. I' rich, of
Huntlev. Montana, a former citizen
heie, in which he says they have had no rain in four months. It has
unquestionoably reduced largely the breath of winter wheat ground which will be sown, and farmers w ill likely yet find it protitable to put in as much as possible. But it is hoed the usual autumn rains have now begun. They will bring with them, however, perils to health, as well as blessings to crops, and persons using drinking water from cisterns or dreams should boil it be!ore using, if they would avoid sickness. In an article on this subject the Kvansville Courier says physicians and experts in bacteriology explain that the first rains after a long pe riod of drouth clean the air of the living putrid particles and typhus
trerins. which being washed into
cisterns contaminate the water there
in thoroughly, and leave the users open to great danger of the dreaded
tvphoid.
So. after a rain period, there is
even more reason for boiling cistern water than before. Tvnhoid fever levies a heavy tax
