The Jasper Public Schools
opened Mouday with a good attend ance. Truant officer W, V. Ken
dall drove to the school house with one pupil on Tuesday, and is "laying low" for others. Prof. Sutherland, in compliance with the orders of the State Hoard, has onened
classes in vocal music, and Jasper
will soon have a generation of good
singers. Mrs. (lUtgsell's primary
department had the largest attend

Win. J. Bryan ad
dressed a district Fair at Burlingame Kans. on Wednesday, and on his way home via the SantaFe railroad, the train he was on hid a head-on collision with another fast train, and
a dozen or more persons were killed, and several others injured. Mr. Bryun rendered active and efficient service by individual work in helping carry the wounded out of harm's
way from the tire which followed the collision, and administering to
their wants. He occupied a seat in a rear Pullman, and none of the
passengers in it were injured
Three locomotives exploded at one
time, and tore a hole under the track into which they fell, and the smok
ing cars and mail cars of both trains
went on top of them, and burned
Mr. Bryan received great praise for
his active assistance.
fcAn individual took exceptions
to the Courier s remarks last week
in regard to the comparative educa tional facilities of the Jasper, Ireland and Holland common schools;
uut a siignt investigation will con
vince any one seeking after truth that they were correct. The same curriculum is followed in each school, and those village schools have an educational emulation surrounding them which is not erceptible in Jasper owing, it is fair to infer, to a desire to shirk responsibility on the part of a school
officer, whose duty it is to see that the funds furnished by the State (not local taxes) are used to the best advantage for the cuniuon schools. If the individual who thought there was something "crazy" about the Cot iiikk's statement, would note how the pupil learn, when he visits the schools, instead of silently counting the numler present, he would le convinced of the truth of the Coi-kier's
statement. Jasper should have had a commissioned high school several years ago. A commissioned high school would be an advertisement throughout the world for Jasper, that the town cannot get any other way, and a projer compliance with duties assumed would obtain it. Let the individual think of it a little before he speaks so rashly again, or he may beat the editor getting into the insane asylum. La Pearl's Show On last Saturday showed to two fair sized audiences in Jasper. The front spring on the handsome bandwagon had broken the day before, so the
"tooters" had to walk in the parade
through the dust, whLh cut short that part. A large nutnlier of coun
try people came in to see the parade and big jump of sixty feet, and then
went home, prosperity not having lined their pockets with enough silver to buy tickets for the show. The performance was all it promised, not a single act being inferior while the I. aPearl boyt-, and the trapeze performances were way above the average. The lady bare back riders were good, but they hau a soft thing of it, as the horses were so fat they could hardly fall off There was no gambling or other fakes allowed around the show, and everything was conducted so as to not offend the most fastidious. This was in great contrast with most circuses, and LaPearl will be heart
ily welcomed when he returns again Fine Peaches. The Courier acknowledges the receipt of half a bushel of fine freestone peaches from Mr. John Mehne, of Portersville. They would average from 8 to 10 inches in circumference.
Come again,

I'he proposed road had its origin
at Knoxville, Tenn., and is to be constructed so as to carry the ton
nage from th? states of Ohio, Illi
nois, and Indiana to the sea, at
Savannah.
The road passes through Knox
ville, Tenn., and reaches north to
Ripley, Ohio. From there a branch
goes to Columbus, Ohio: another
branch goes to Indianapolis, Ind.,
while a third crosses the Ohio river
somewhere near New Albany, and, passing through Jasper, Petersburg, and Yincennes, goes on to Springfield, Illinois. Col. Boone's policy for the operation of the "Black Diamond" system of railways is as follows : "To encourage people to reside
along the line of the Black Diamond
H vhways of commerce, passenger rates for local residents to be fixed njt to exceed the following fares: One way, two cents per mile; round trips, LIMITED, QOOO FOR ONLY ONE
week, one and a half cents per mile ;
for the outside public the rates shall not exceecj three cents per mile. An excursion train to be run over the same route the local passenger train cjvers at least once a month, upon which the fare will lie one cent M IT -ll It II I

of the Black Diamond lines to sub-
scrit as a bonus a sum equal to not less than one-tenth of the actual
cost of any plant erected consuming
raw materials of not less than one
car load per day, outside the cost of real estate, the bonus so subscribed to be paid by the railway company
Mr permit: ing the freight bills of
such plant so erected and operated to be credited with an amount equal to not less than one-fifth of its freight bill?, covered only by the
corjKration so subscribing, until the bonus is paid. No tickets to be on sale outride of the railway ticket offices of the black Diamond lines. (Heine the Black Diamond lines will not be ! forced to go into pools forihe maintaining of arbitrary rates.) The articles of good faith that will bf inaugurated by the Black Dia- I mond corporations, and to insure ;
the carrying out of same, will be in- ;

Board of Directors and ratified by
the stockholders before the mortgage is made. It will make eyery
line of the Black Diamond Highways a paying investment to capitalists. Why? Because it insures constant use of its tracks to handle the great traffic in store for it. It will be a system of railroads that will not only give its lest service to the people living along its lines, but work solely for their welfare and advancement in the commercial world." At the suggestion of Gen, Williams and Col. Boone the chair was called upon fo appoint a commiltee
to work in behalf of Jasper and the proposed road. After consultation and conideration the chair announced the appointment of the following men to serve on the above mentioned committee: John (iramelspacher, Ph. Hilly, Winfield S. Hunter, Herman Kckert, (-lenient Doane, Andrew Kckert, Sebastian Kuebler, (teorge I'. Wagner, Joseph F. Friedman, John A. Sermersheim. Dr. John P. Salb, Dr. Kdward J. Kempf. The meeting adjourned at the call of the president. John L. Bkktk, Chairman. 0w. R. Wilson, Secretary. At the meeting at Dubois on Tuesday. Hon. Frank Pinnick was elected President of Harbison town-
shin R. R. executive committee, and Kdward Kllis Secretary, and they were authorized to call uieetand take such other steps as may be necessary to secure the railroad, if possible.
At the same meeting Mr. (ieorire
I Dekemper was elected President to
have reached a decision. If New
Albany and Yincennes citizens favor the organization wilh large subscriptions of stock, the little fishes along the line will get in the current. For Dubois county it would be a big jump forward, no matter who owns it, and as it would run at least 24 miles through the Bounty, the taxes to aid it would be but a loan, as the sum placed on the duplicate
by it would soon repay the tax, and be a permanent increase of the wealth of the county, as much as
the total ot some of the townships now show on the tax duplicate. With a road to the town of Dubois that spiightly village would soon be a considerable incorporated town. The citizens there realize this and are all enthusiastic for the railroad. No village in the county has improved more substantially
than Ihitxns in the past two years, ami its many neat residences and business houses are an evidence of
the enterprise an 1 thrift of its peo
ple, only needing the advantages of rail connection with the business world to make of it a prominent place. While we were there on Monday a wagon load of excellent btuminous coal, from a near-by mine with a five foot vein, was
brought in for Beckman, and it would prove a mine of wealth, nearly equal to a claim on the Klondike, if a railroad was built near enough to carry it to market. If the gentlemen at the head of the "Black Diamond" prove themselves as good organizers as they are talkers, and Prosperity once more visits this country, their railroad proposal will be a ftOOOftM and
the people will bless them
