SaTThe "write up" of some of Jasper business men, done ly Mr. Phillip, will appear in the CoUMlBN next week. It did not get in in time for this issue.

nF"Mr. Wiinnaninkt r's "hin! of beautiful plumage" will not return till the vicious discrimination against free silver coinage is re

moved. The I'nited States is big enough to be indejendent in its internal management of any kind. wsJk-Mr. John Wibbelt is building u fine store room at St. Anthony two stories and a plate glass front putting on city style. When completed he will have a nice bu-i-ness building, and a large stock oi goods, and is bound to do a big trade.

WPThose directors of the Jeffersonville Reformatory, if they have

hiiv pride about them, would hand

Oov. Mount their resignations immediately, and not wait to be kicked out. Hut the same stealings of the State money for the ward n'- use has been going on for ten years or more, and nothing said about it. u that officer had I "strong pull." Hail Storm. The locality of Jasper was visited Sunday afteenoOD last by a big thunder storm, accompanied by rain, and the largest hail stones ever noticed here some of them measuring an inch in diameter. A good deal of vegetation wa damaged, and fruit knocked off of trees. The editor of the COUIIBX, after the tain passed, gathered enough hail stones to freeze ice cream in a "Lightening" freezer. StaT There is a good deal of fun and some low-down lying being poked at McKinley 'a proposed annexation of Hawaii. But the acquisition of those islands, to be held as a territory only till the population is thoroughly o,ualitied for Statehood, would be a splendid thing for the commercial and naval interests of the United States, and the extension of U. S. laws over them would destroy the system of jveon labor now existing there. UfThe County Board of Review begun its session Monday. The Board passed Columbia township as returned by the township BSSeSSor, examined the individual returns in Harbison and passed it, subject to a few corrections, to be made hereafter. The same order was made in Boone, and the Board are

Tuesda Horniog. June 22, lfW7. Since the JJd uav of July, 18(15. Rev. P. PlDBLM Maitk, (.)". S. B., lias been the loved prie.t in c harge of the Catholic congregation at Jasper. For nearly tS years he devoted the prime ot hi- lite ami bil plendid energies to the upbuilding of the congregation, and the spiritual welfare of its members. The pteeent large stone church building is a monument to his excellent management, financially, while the 'jonlirmation in the church ot 2021 member! during his ministry, is a -Inning testimonial of the way in which he looked after the spiritual welfare of his eople. For nearly two vears he has been sorelv at-

Sicted with cancer of the stomach, giving him almost constant pain, and reducing his usually stalwart frame to a mere semblance of his former self, so that when the grim messenger called him Taesdsv morning from labor to reward, it ITU to him a welcome surcease from pain. The sacrament of extreme

unction was administered to him by

Father Stephen Stenger, his successor, and who has leen serving in his stead during his sickness, and was with him w hen he died. Father Fidelis passed to the beyond with an exultant faith that he had "fought the good tight, had kept the faith, and SU ready." Never did a congregation become more attached to its pastor than has the Jasper congregation to Father Fidelis. He has watched with solicitude man) of the members grow from baptism to manhood ; has officiated at their marriages, buried many of their loved ones, and mourned with the bereaved, and condoned many of their faiflts with fatherly christian advice, and well

deserved their respect and love.

He was about 03 vears oldJTa native

of Sigmaringen, 1'russsia, a gradu

ate of St. Meinrad Ahhev, where h-

made his profession Sept. , lSf;,

and was ordained in Jan., 1864, by

Bishop St. Plleis. His first charge was the then small church at Maria Hill, in Spencer county, where be

served about a year, and then took charge of the Jasper congregation.

Jttly 22, 1866. succeeding Rev. P. Wolfgang. Since Father Fidelis has had charge of the Jasper congregation

he has baptised 1,993 children ; and has had confirmed 2,021 persons, by administation of the first communion; and has officiated at 11 til burials, besides numerous marriages, visits to the sick, oonfossions, and superintending the material improvements of the church grounds, and the celebration of daily masses, and preaching on Sabbath. It will be readily seen his Hsition has been no sinecure. Since January, 1896,

A Judicious Investment. An Anderson correspondent of

the IndianajRilis Sentinel shows what proper management by a municipal corporation can accom plish with public necessities. It nays: Anderson took the initial Htep last evening toward securing a gas plant and also the Commercial lighting plant. The water works is already owned by the city and not only produces revenue sufficient to meet all operating expenses, but pays enough to care for its bonds and at the same time give the people the cheapest water service in the country. It is now proposed to purchase the Commercial light plant and operate it in connection with the street lighting plant already owned. A committee has been appointed by the city council to investigate and report at the earliest poesihls moment. Judge Zenor, congressman from

this district, who has been ut bisi

home at Corydon the past two week attending lo important business, will return to Washington on Thursday. Judge Zenor has solar made the Third district one of the

most etlicient members it lias bad

in congress. He has beer, true to the interests of the people, and bis faithfulness in representing the district has added largely to hispret ions popularity. It is not at all likely that he will have any opposition tor renominating It is certain he eliould not. N. A. Ledger.

The Hon. T. P, O'Connor gives many reasons why he and other Irishmen should refuse to participate in the festivities tmw in prog real this week in London. He says that while Kngland has advanced in material prosperity that the decline in Ireland during the Victorian era has been appalling. Kngland 's population has increased 20 per cent, while Ireland's has decreased 47 per cent. Fifty years ago there were only fifty-two paupers per thousand i; Ireland and forty-nine in Kngland. Now the ratio has risen in Ireland to ninety-five, while it has decreased in Kngland to twenty-six. The population has decreased in Ireland almost one-half, and the taxation per capita is double what it was fifty years ago, while in Kngland it is not one half w hat it was half a century ago. If this appalling arraignment is the result of Knglish rule in Ireland one ceases to wonder why the Irish heart should feel very frosty to-day in the streets of London. Ind. Sentinel.
