19 When the jury brought in a verdict of guilty against Norris, he fell to the Hoor and moaned and wept profusely, and it was feared he would have a tit of some kind. He had to be nearly carried out of the court room on his way to jail, moaning piteously all the time. When he was sentenced he exclaimed "my poor children, without mother or father." Judge Kly replied "Retter that way than the way you treated them."
atsTCorpus Christi day was solemnly observed by the members of St. Joseph's Catholic congregation yesterday, by masses and prayers, and a beautiful procession. But the celebration does not attract so much outside attention as it used to in Jasper a few years ago, when people came from miles around out of mere curiosity to see the exercises, and often caused a good deal of trouble.

On Tuesafternoon Michael Durlauf, Jr. and Kdward Kempf, Jr., two young hoys, were shooting at bull frogs on Patoka River, with rifles, near the water works intake. Durlauf had hot one, and going to the end of a skiff to get it, young Kempf followed him with his gun cocked. In stepping tnto the boat Kempf's gun hit the wales and was discharged,
the ball taking effect in Durlauf s leg, below the knee. The lad fainted away, and some men who were at the veneer factory carried him up the river bank, and a conveyance was sent for to take him home. The wound will confine him to the house for several days. A Grand Papkb. Typographi
cally and artistically the Chicago
Tribune's "Golden Jubilee edition, ' 1 of June 20th is the biggest thing in the newpaper line every tried in the world. It has forty-eight pages of seven columns each, and is largely devoted to a history of Chicago. There is one amusing picture in it, entitled "The site of the Tribune Building previous to 184(1." It represents Indians in costume, one and two story houses, a carriage with ladies, the horses being driven by a driver in livery, and a street car drawn by horses. Street cars were not thought of anywhere for years later than that. That artist, like some other" historians," is possessed of an imaginary nature.

(Kroui our Kf olar rorrrapoiiilflll.) WASHINGTON I KTT I E R , W aSMKQTO, l C, J UM 16. Oh yes, the Republican Senators are harmonious' So bannooioUfl that it has bveii necessary during the past week to hold DO less than four caucuses, at every one of which there was red hot talk against allowing the tru-t to dictate their jrisbSi as to the schedule of the tariff bill in which thev are ii:terOtod, and about other things which are being crammed dow n the tbroat of Republican Senators against their own wishes and against the wishes of their constituents. Still they vote as a unit on the lloor of
the Senate. It came out at one ot these caucuses that Mr. McKinley has a treaty for the annexation of Hawaii, ready to send to the Senate, as soon as the tariff is out of the way. The statement was made to .stop" the tight that was Doing made for the abrogation of the reciprocity treaty with Hawaii. The treatv goes to the Senate to .lav . The report of the committee on contingent expenses, against Senator Tillman's resolution for an investigation of the charges that Senatois had !een speculating in sugar stock since the tariff bill has been under consideration, attracted very little attention, because it was known that it would be against the resolution ever since the republican caucus decided that an investigation would be inadvisable. The report argues against an investigation because other investigations have been barren of results, which is about equivalent to saying that one or two criminals having failed to be convicted, it is useless 10 bring any more to trial. Senator Tillman baa been dropping hints of sensational information in his possession on this subject, and there is a runmr that he will make some charges in public speech that will make an investigation absolutely necessary. The minority of the Senate Committee on Finance will have a vote on the tariff amendment prepared by them, which provides for an internal revenue tax for a period of five years of 2 percent, on all agttlei of deceased persons exceeding the value of lö.tHK, excepting those bequeathed to religious, charitable, educational, or like institutions. It would be ditlicult to find an easier way to add a considerable amount to the revenues of the country or one that would Ik less felt by the people, but there are no cuts in it tor any trusts, so the trust' bound majority of the Senate will most likely vote it down. Senators Cannon, Mantle and Pettigrew and ex-Senator Dubois have been appointed a commission by the executive committee of the UVef republican party, and charged with the duty of visiting Japan and China and possibly India, for the purjHise of investigating the silver question in those countries. They will go as soon as Congress adjourns. But little interest generally has been taken in the tariff qoottlOO, a all recognize that the coinage question is at the front to stay till settled, and settled right, by patriotic, independent free coinage. The gold advocates want to retire the greenbacks as well as silver, and place the country at the mercy of bankers, but they aae afraid of a rebellion that would vote the last one of them out of oAot and they like nothing better than otlice not even their God.
