he has a bill of the expense of the street hands in laying water Baths! to St. Joseph's Catholic church, and that the congregation will pay it. Every one supposed the congregation would pay the expense of laying no matter who put them under ground as it had bought the mains and hydrant from the town at cost, and they were consequently its own property. Certainly the Coikikk never intimated that the work was being done at the town's expense, but simply that the streit hands were employed in doing the work, so there was no need of explanations in regard to it, as the churches usually comply with their contracts. However, Marshal Hoffman informs the Coukikk that the street hands did not lav the mains.

At told in last week's
the Jasper Reds went to I'etenbura
Thursday to play ball with the club there. The game was a brilliant one, throughout. Up to the 7th inning Jasiier had shut Petersburg out entirely, and had secured one run. Then the Petersburg team and fans Itegan cursing their own umpire, Taylor, who was Irving to be impartial ami fair, and bull do e I him in the next two innings into
giving 1'etersburg tour runs anil Jasjier none. The attendance was about 500, many from Evansville, Washington, Oakland City, and other places, who had gone on excursions there to see the Jumbo gas well, and who were almost unanimous in their condemnation of the unfair decisions. But Jasper stuck to it to the last inning, determined to give the visitors the worth of their money in a good ball game Instead of flunking, as Petersburg did in Jasper last summer, and refusing to play. To induce the Jasper Reds to go there Mr. Lorv, manager of the
Petersburg team wrote to Mr. Mel
chior, the manager of the Reds, guaranteeing expenses of the trip would In- paid. After that he tele graphed the same thing. I' pon getting to Petersburg some of the Jasper men heard that it was nude up that Lory should pay no eipeaeei
of the Jasiter club, and Melchior n
fused to let his club go to the ball grounds until Lorv promised him
faithfully, again, to pay their expenses if they would play, that then was a good crowd in the town, and the game would draw a large attend
ance, and there would be a general
disappointment without a game
and Vinn Greene, hso. , endorsed
Lory, saying he was "good for his
contracts, and would do as he said.
While the game was in progress word
was sent the landlord of the Pike
hotel, that he must collect his bill
from the Jasper men, as it was not intended to pay anything for then.
hen thev returned from the
grounds the landlord told them of
it, and thev iinmediatelv SOUght for
Lory and demanded settlement of
$lb50 as expenses, which was re fused, although the attendance
bowed receipts of about !flHl He
alleged that last year the Petersburg team had to pay its own expense. -in Jasper, the time the Petersburg
team backed out, and refused to
play after the 1st inning. He was
reminded that the cases were not similar, Jasper having played the nine innings. A suit against Lory,
personally, will likely be the result of the littleness. Some who wen
in the Jasper club last vear, rod not
this, sav the club was served right.
as they knew from last year's experience there was no honor in the
Petersburg Club. The feature of the game was the
pitching of Schuhmacher of the
Jasper team. But two hits were made off of his delivery the entire
game, with thirteen struck out men
credited to him. Many patrons of the game declared it to be the finest exhibition of pitching ever seen on the Petersburg grounds.
