SfggSs. "Literal children, or, more properly, children who take your chiding literally, are holy terrors, ' ' relates a young man noted for his politeness to ladies. "I wss in a herdtc the other day which was much crowded, though no one was standing at the time. Presently a lady and gentleman got in, and I gave my seat to the lady, leaving the old gentle-
standing. Immediately a young
lady sitting in one end of tbe herdic called to her little sister, a child of 0
perhaps, who was sitting near the door
at the other end, to come to her and gire her aeat to tbe elderly gentleman. Ths child came willingly enough, and While the sister was reading her a lesson
manners s passenger got out, and I
took n seat. "Nerer let me see yon remain seated again when people older than yon are standing," closed the lecture, and the child was crowded, half sitting, half standing, between the older sister and the lady next to her. Two
minutes later a pretty girl got in. and of course, as tbe only gentleman in the
herdic, I gare her my seat. No sooner
trad I done so than that email terror was
on her feet.
"Oh, mister," she said in sweet,
thrill accent a "yon take my seat I You'a older than me. " And everybody Laughed, of course, trust a lot of giggling girls for that, for the only place on earth
that I could have "taken a aeat" was on
ths sister's lap, from which the child
had slid I didn't take the seat, but I
did take to the street and walked fire
blocks in a drixsling rain to get away
from the giggle of those gir la Wash ington Star.
A London audience is brilliant Every one is in evening dress, and tbe audience is often more entertaining than
the play. This is especially true on a first night. At such times the pit is watched most anxiously by the management, as the success of the piece generally depends on its verdict. It has often occurred to me, when I have seen people on a stormy night forming a line on tbe pavement outside the pit entrance, taking it all seriously enough to stand there for hours before the doors were opened, that by letting them inside, the management might improve their spirits and They in their turn might be more gentle Aud it haa also occurred to me when
I have seen a stout man standing in the aisle fumbling for s sixpence or a shilling in pockets that probably only contain a bank note and a goldpiece that the manaftement might further improve the spirits of ita audience by doing away with women ushers, and by selling the programme at the same time it sells the seat, for it is hardly fair to the first act of a play to make it overcome the fretfulness caused by annoying attendants before it can hope to amuse. But the secovd act ia sure to have a fair start, and if be plsy Is good from there on it will have no reason to complain of the audience. C. D. Gibson in Scnb-ner'a

rlaat'a Wall.
Hadrian, in A D. ISO, built a stone
wall from Bownesa, near Carlisle, on Sol way frith, to the river Tyne, near Newcastle. It was 80 miles long and garrisoned by 10,000 troops. It was from IS to SO feet high at various points, 8 feet think at the top and was provided with a gallery in the rear, which enabled ita defenders to take their stand with only head and shoulders visible to the enemy. At every quarter of a mile there was a castle with a garrison of troops Beacon lights and signals were used, and on an attack, whether by day or by night, tbe news was at once flashed ap and down ths wall from sea to sea.
Bllleal taa Davtt. A burglar recently met with his deserts in a dramatic manner. In the neighborhood of a place called Hunts burg, near Oldenburg, two littk boys, aged respectively 8 and IS, were left by their mother at home to take care of the house. A man with blackened face and in black attire suddenly entered and announced himself to the scared little mites as his satanic majesty. "I am the devil Where do you keep your money V ' They instantly pointed toward the massive trunk where the modest wealth of the parents was treasured up While, however, ths mmrky looking impostor was ransacking the chest, the younger of the two boys whispered to his broth er, "Go and fetch the gun and shoot the devil dead." The brother jumped at the idea, fetched the leaded weapon, crept up to the nnsnrpecting thief and lodged the whole charge in hia bark. He fell back dead. London Telegraph.
