pretense ;

chance to pay closer attention to the Fitzsimmons-Corbett fight.

RSThe Republican Congress may levy a tariff tax as high as they please and it will not increase the revenue, unless it gives the people more money by a re-monetization of silver, for the common people have nothing to buy goods with now, even at a low price, and many of them are compelled to tramp around the country begging lor something to eat. What matters it whether a suit of clothes sells for 2 or $10, if a man has not 10 cents to buy with? JBaIt is an astounding circumstance that the corporation taxes in Jasper are 28 cents on the hundred dollars greater than both State and county taves together, and yet money has to be borrowed to pay the interest on the town debt, and no provision whatever has been made to provide a fund to reduce the debt. A laboring man wbh a house apt) raised at $500 must na $7.90 cor-

g w a poration tax. This fact should be remembered when the nominations are made for a majority of the Trustees on Saturday of next week, and candidates selected pledged to economy until the debt is paid, so that taxation may be reduced. RWDeputy Sheriff Vic Cassidy took Tom. Kesternon to Orange county last Sunday, where he was sent for trial by Judge Ely. That law as to changes of venue ought to be repealed entirely. Kesterson could have had iust as fair a trial

m in this county as he will get any where, by taking the jury from the southern part of the county, where he nor his offense, if any, have ever been thought of by one person in a thousand, and it would have saved Dubois county a large bill of expense. No defendant's affidavit should be permitted to run the county to a bill of expense, where he can obtain justice without it, and this should be the law, but probably never will be while the people continue to Bend to the Legislature a majority of lawyers, who must live by the fees they get. FITZSIMMONS THE CHAMPION.

In the fight between the big

bruisers at Carson City Wednesday, Fitzsimmons knoc ked Corbett out in the 14th round, thus winning the fistic championship. A half dozen challenges were made on the sjKit, but Fitz refused to notice them, lie expects to star with a boxing company this summer and make some money before he engages in another tight, if he ever does.
