of the jury giving him 12 years. He told them that he "hoped they all might die and he in hell before daylight next morning." But as ha had already served three terms in the pen hia prayer didn't hurt the farmer-jurors any. The oldest member of the Indiana House of Representatives is Hon. IVTbe Republican legislative caucus Tuesday night was a lively one but it nominated Fairbanks for U. 8. Senator, and will elect him next Tuesday. Money counts. The vote was as follows : Fairbanes, 60 ; General Lew Wallace, G ; W. R. McKeen of Terre Haute, 11 ; R. S. Taylor of Fort Wayne, 3 ; Frank Posey of Evansviile, 3 ; Benjamin Harrison, 1 , Judge Baker, 1.
MeThe Bankers' Convention at
Indianapolis resolved that the
"Government should maintain the present gold standard, and to that end should retire all U. S. notes, and give banks, only, the power to issue paper money." No doubt that would be very nice for some banks. It would give them a never-ending right to draw interest from the Government and People both at the same time on the same money.

Senator Sweeney has been ap
pointed by Lieut. Gov. Haggard on more important committees than any other Senator in that body. The Lieut. Gov. certainly recognises
our Senator's ability, or wants to
keep him so busy in committee work that be won't have much time on the floor of the Senate. He is on the following committees : Corporations, Public Printing, Mines and Manufacturers, Congressional
Aüüortionment. Inspection of the
Journal, Fees and Salaries, Rules.
lsevThe Courier stated the exact truth, and stated it fairly, in regard to the employment of Bretz AMc Fall as county attorneys at the highest bid nade. It was an effort
superinduced by the county auditor
to reward B. & M. for services at the public expense, and to wreak a little revenge on Milburn and
Sweeney. The facts and causes are all well known to all conversant with Dubois county politics for few years past. Some men demand that others shall follow meekly in their lead, or be deprived of all business they can influence. Some who trusted them have already come to grief, who, acting wiser, might have succeeded. The Kellams att'y employment was a very flimsy sub
terfuie. The Constitution of the
State says every accused person
shall have a fair trial, and have counsel. No fair judge would
compel a defendant, on trial for her
life, to go into trial without counsel
of her own free choice. No law, or provision of courts, anywhere, gives
a county board or anyone but the
accused, the right to choose counse
for a poor person, lney are entitled to a fair trial says the consti tution, and it is higher authority than county boards, county auditors or Judges. Mr. Milburn was
on hand in the Kellatns case, and helped conduct the defense, but
the woman preferred Taylor for
counsel. The same thing happened to this county in Orange county, when Kesterson was tried their on a change of venue for killing Dan
Nicholson, and the Court there compelled this county to pay $400
Tke Evsnsville Editor Qets After Meo. There is one member of the Fairbanks camp who is very hot, says ihe Indianapolis Sentinel of Sunlay. This is no less a person than Editor J. H. McNeely, of Evansviile, who has been in the city dur-
n the past week mingling with the ...i . . .i. f. .:
crowd in me interest 01 un ru-
banks candidacy.
When Mr. McNeely first came to
the city the first of last week he
was an enthusiastic rairbanks man
and was not particular who found
it out. He was for bairbanks hrst, last and all the time. During his
conversations wun various persons
who were also here in the interest of the Indianapolis candidate, Mr. McNeely happened to find out that there had been numerous promises made as to the appointments, and three other persons claimed to have liHfn nrnmised the collectorship at
Terre Haute in return for services rendered at a time when they count
ed. From that moment the wrath of Mr. McNeelv was great.
Since that time Mr. McNeely has been telling his troubles. He has told how, when he was a delegate to the national convention at St. Louis, he voted for W. T. Durbin, of Anderson, for national committeeman in return for the explicit promise that he was to get the Terre Haute collectorship, and this promise had been made to him by Mr. Fairbanks, Mr. Durbin and Mr. Gowdy. He had favored B. H. Nebeker for the place because he
considered him ad the best politician in the state, but he had been won away from his choice by the allure
ments of the collectorship, and since
that time had been fully relying up
on the f ullfillment of those promises
made to him. It was on the strength of this promise that he
came here last week in the interests of Mr. Fairbanks, and only to find that the same job had been promised to at least two other men, who were here at work for the same man. "They don't need to give me a job unless they want to," said Mr. McNeely. "1 can live without it. I own a half interest in the Evansviile Journal, which is enough f r me to live on, so I am independent, but I'll say to you that if they don't
keep their promise to me there is

is it any better in Dubois county'' A cold blooded murderer gets either free or t or 7 years in the Pen. A man who steals a $10 old plug is given the limit. (Hall got IS years and Mrs. Hall ö years, 17 years.) Kill or murder it does not amount to much, but oh! spare my old Hoss! Such is Dubois county justice. In the last six months in in my travels around the county I have seen lawlessness running riot and supreme. At Haysville, Kvana, Celestine, Birdseye, Ferdinand, Huntingburg and Jasper on most any dav, and especially Sun
days, the statutes of Indiana are outrazed more than a hundred
c , - times. And it is said that those connected with these same violators of the law openly boast that the Judge of the Court agreed that in return for their support he would have as few grand juries as possible. We have a prosecutor whose duty is supposed by many to be, to see that the laws are enforced, and who says he is willing to do his part. Yet violations are on the increase. We have a Sheriff. Constables. Justices of
the Peace almost innumerable, and Jasper and Huntingburg Marshals also, who are elected and paid to see that the laws are enforced. Why do they not do their Dl TY? Stand up Mr. Judge, Prosecutor, Sheriff, Justices of the Peace, Con
stables and Marshals, and tell the public why sentence ot incompetency and mal-administration of office should not be passed upon you? In this county at the end of the 19th century the laws are outraged oftener than at any other period since the organization of the northwest territory. A few plug-ugly country cross-road speakers and would-be candidates to the contraiy notwithstanding. ClTtfSX.

Mr. McNeely 8 charges have caused something of a sensation in inner political circles. His statements are credited, as he is known to have been on the inside of the Fairbanks circle for some time. During the past few days, however,
he has been threatening rebellion. His statement as to Mr. Brownlee is somewhat surprising, as it was generally believed that Mr. Brownlee was to be given the judgeship of the Grant county superior court, which
