seyBy the town contracting for only 19 arc lights, instead of 20, the

annual expense of lighting is re

duced to f 1 .092.50. Several more

lights are needed, but the town

can't afford them.

MT A number of good tax-payer

in Jasper presented a petition to the

Board of Trustees Monday night toi the extension of 5th street west. Several of them have complained on the streets about the town taxes, and yet they seem to want more. Go ahead. Let's have a city and

citv revenues and expenses. What's

the use of fooling. MKTha half dozen residents on 1st street were represented before the town board on Monday night by a committee asking for an electric street light at the intersection of either Main and 1st or Newton and 1st streets. Their claim is a just one, the way the lights are distributed. One is placed on 2d and Main, to light up the lumber yard and

bog pen, and one at 4th and I lay. to light up the vacant bottom land south of it, and two on 9th street west of Clay, where but two houses are built, to light up the grave yard and lay the ghosts. SMr. John Beiddey told the Board he wanted one to light up bis neigh bood, so that when he came up town after dark, he wouldn't tramp unawares on the poor snakes as he went home.

Escape of Lester aas Hall froaa Jail. Our citiaens were surprised last Friday morning to learn that Lea ter, charged with forgery, and Hall, charged with horse-stealing, had escaped. An examination showed that they bad taken a four inch scantling, about 12 feet long, which had been left in the corridor of the jail, placed it on the top of the cell

crib, and let one end rest on the

west wall of the jail, at an angle of about oO degrees, and that by climbing it they had been enabled to reach the roof of the jail, where it required but small effort to cut through the inch poplar boards and tin roof. They had fastened a number of bed blankets together and let themselves down from the roof to the ground, making their a . a

escape eaay. As it is claimed no

one heard them at work, it is supposed they got out after people gen

erally had gone to bed, though the

time is not known.

When Sheriff Cassidy, about 9

o'clock, Thursday night, went to lock them up for the night in the crib, he glanced at their beds, and

seeing the covers bunched up in the middle remarked that they were in bed, locked the crib door and went out. It is supposed they were then

hiding in the corridor around the cells, where they had been permitted

to go in order to keep up the fire in the stove. They may have been out at that time. When Mrs. Cassidy took in their breakfasts Friday morning ehe unlocked the crib door, and called them to come and eat. An insane man. also in jail, came

out, but Lester and Hall did not. She then called the Sheriff, and upon examination the beds were found the same as he had left them the night before, some of the covering
