The church stands to-day with piping mouth and idle hands, wondering at her empty pews, while red handed alcohol leads immortal souls to ruin. This h not only a moral question, the liquor trallic is a spiritual enemy as well, and the bibbreads in Proverbs 24 ; XI. XII, If
HOMING PIGEONS, POINTS FROM FANCIERS ON THESE INTELLIGENT BIRDS.

The n general opinion among thoa who know BsrtiUSM e.f the nubject ii that the bird fl by night Joue. Thin theory would ueeiu to be borne out hy the fact that the bent and moot highly bred of racing birds have frequently been lost in tho London fog. The fart that instinct i unerring and that the homing pigeon not only frequently em, but exhibit at tteS great indicision an to the correct courtte for him to pursue, wenig to prechule the idea that he in governed solely by instinct. The theory which in meet g n. rally Hccepttd is that the bird is gifted with remarkable eyesight and also w ith a memory for lundmarks which ii superior to a similar faculty in any other animal. That the bird possesses a high order of intelligence is shown from the fact that homers which have become lost in a pses will frequently return to the riom in whic h they have Is en kept at the starting point of their speed test. Iu selecting homing pigeons fir racing purjioets even the Inst fanciers often pick OUl birds us most like racers that cannot fly 20 miles without becoming Msk The meanest, BNS scraggy looking bird, without a single good point, smietiuus leave its handsome competitor, who is, to all appearances, perfect ill pliysicul proHrtions, far iu the rear. Still, fuucit-rs look with iuterest at four points in a homing pigeou which are considered of prime importance. The first of these is, strange aa tbe fact may aprx ar to a novice iu Ihs urt, the eyp. Mr. Murr, one of the foremiwt and most successful of Americau fanciers, has this to say of the ey' : "The white eye may mean the cuniolft, und, if so, indicates that the bird will fly high, have great endurance and wing power. If the eye is dark, tbe head round and the beak short and close Utting, there will be a prepondcrunci f the owl type, and the result will be that the bird will fly later at night than any other type. But, whatever tie- c haracter of the color, the ball rnifi extend beyond the line of the head and te so placed that the bird should have a view of what is behind us well as before it When a bird returns from a journey ovtr much new territory, this protrusion of the eyeball is greatly increased, h'jwing to what a great strain the lowers of
vision have been subjected." While Mr. istair, in common with oth r succe ssful American fanciers, pays little or no attention cither to tbe site or shape of the In ad, this poiut is the secouci at which BaSQfSM fanciers look with interest. It is geuerully conceded
that Um shape makes but little difference. The skull may M flat, long and narrow, or high, short snd wide, but it must have room for the brain, und for a large Irani ut that, Of else the bird is not conside red a like ly cunclidate for racing honors. Gn at stress is laid on this organ by all H- Igium and Holland fanciers, but in this country the feature
is almost entirely overlooked. The BSMJSt should be broad and is of a
great importance as the wing. A liar-
row chested bird can fly no great distance' without exerting the musrlis which give fullness totbe breast tieyond their endurance. The wings and tail should both be exceptionally long, as the tail a'-ts as u rudder, and the shorten wings require much added e xertion for the same- umouiit of flying. The color of a pigeon has no signifi
cance, but the rule iu breeding is to cross tbe colors whe n practicable. Even the liest Ind of the homers
require most careful and intelligent training before they are entered in races. While the physique of the bird is we II developed at the age of 10 weeks, it is thought best to give a considerably lnnge r tune for the brain to devedop befon the bird is trained for the work which lie s ahead of bim. At the age of 4 months the first trial trips may bei made-, and he is then flown from distance s of Is tween 2 and UO miles ut in
tervals of two or three days apart. Many birds are lost in these trial trips, and those which return safely from the looser trial trips may be considered tit to enter iu the young bird races. The short st of these is 100 miles in length, and birds ure uot supposed to w flown more thnii DO miles before taking part in the spe-ed trials. For the young birds the system of training is supposed to accomplish two wide ly different results. In tbe first place they Mask the young bird to return to his loft, and in tbe second they develop the muscles and prepare them for the hard work which the races will require of th. in. Training trips for older birds are made with the sole view of getting their muscles limbered up again and toughened for the longer race s. Chicago Chronicle.
