WasliiiiRton. Dec. 5. (Spvcinl.)" Till 1 ,,ot !,s ,uucl1 u" "H i'im 'uiKnt Iniugiiti'," wilil tins new dork of the liuiiijof reprebcntntivcK, Mr. McDowell, this inoriihif?. "It Ik one thliiff to seek ortlcc, nnotlicr thinf to secure office, ami another thin,' to cUupuiiFC patronage. There are M5 republican jucjiibers of thu house, and each one of them expects ut least one appointment in the clerk's olllee. As a nmtter t,f fact there are less than 300 oilices at the disposal of the cleric, and so you see that the metuliersnru asking impossibilities of me. Of course 1 knew this in advance, und lain trying to make the best of it; but oillce holding in high places is not like living on milk mid honey and lying on a bed of roses." As a matter of fact, the republicans riadc a spectacle of themselves in the organization of their body. For two weeks previous to the meeting of the republican caucus there were headquarters opened here for Mr. McDowell, of Pennsylvania, and Gen. Henderson, of

Illinois, both of whom were candidates for the ofliee of cleric. Kverybody knew und conceded that Gen. Henderson was an exceedingly popular man and an old member. It was presumed that the older congressmen from the western states would stand by him, so that the contest, when it came down to an actual vote, would prove to be a very close, one. As a matter of fact, however, the Henderson managers were cither too proud or too unwise to make political bargains, and the McDowell managers were neither proud nor unwise, but made bargains. They did as all practical politicians do in organizations of that kind. They made pledges in advance, of what their candidates would do if elected. The result was that fully two-thirds of the republicnns of the bouse of representatives went Hoc kins like sheep to the standard of the man who agreed to give them little plums of'patronage. It was a peculiar spectacle to a looker-on to witness a great political party rushing after the spoils of office in that manner. It had been generally supposed til at the people elected a majority of republicans to the house of representatives for the purpose of having them do business for the general welfare; but when the republicans got here they wemed to think that their first func

tion Khould be to get as many oilices as

possible for their constituents ut

home, in order to make themselves

solid for renomination and reelection next year. In fact, that seems to be thti" principal business of most congressmen of both parties after coming to Washington. They are dipping into the future as far as human eye can see, in order to secure a great career without a time limitof any character. The national policy for the republican party to pursue was outlined in the t-pceeh of Speaker "Heed in accepting the raucus nomination on Saturday night. It has been further elaborated in an authorized interview with Nelson Dingley, of Maine, who is likely to be made chairman of the committee on ways and means. The policy to bo pursued is one of inertia. The republican party, which has always heretofore claimed to be one of progress and aggression, has thus publicly confessed, through its chosen mouth-piece, that it is hi the future to be a party of inert politicians instead of positive statesmen. Mr. Dingley sees in the future n great big bugaboo, in the form of a presidential veto, in the event that a revenue bill should pass the house and senate. He also says, as a matter which appears to him to be a fact, there would be a veto of anv financial measure which

might be passed for the relief of the j treasury. These are subterfuges and j the people of the country will realize that very clearly. If the republican parly would undertake to do wait'thing and fail, it would have a better standing before the plain people. Ilut inasmuch as Mr. Jleed has a presidential bee buzzing about his cam all the time, he has acquired the timidity which always conies to men who reel: the highest ofliee in the land. During the last few days the republican senators have awakened from their lethargy and have concluded that it will be necessary for them to reorganize the unate and' accept the responsibility which they have endeavored to f.hirk. 1 Wore the republican caucus of Monday afternoon was held, there was a prevailing sent iment among the republican senators that they should follow the eumplc of Mr. Heed and Mr. Dingley. and declined to assume responsibilities of any character. The western republlern s-enators, however, are nearly all of them young men who declare thin" v ill not submit to thetlomiuation of the eoEservntivc old fellows In the senate; fi.id the energy which has come to the lejitiblican senate bar. been malnlycontniuiicd by the republicans of the north wept. I have been Informed by a democratic leader very close to the president that if the senate and the house of reprei;t tiitlves, being republican as they

arc, should pass partisan measures for

'tie relief of the treasury, either by a protective measure or by a change in

There is a class interested in poultry

that buys from farmers, and after

dressing the poultry the carcasses are

shipped to market. It is a very prof

itable business, and such dealers arc useful in a community, being always ready to accept any of the surplus stock offered and save time and labor for the furnier-, as they dress and ship hundreds of carcasses at once, while some farmers, in order to secure n few

cents more per pound, do not take into consideration the labor they bestow in preparing but a few fowls for shipment. A greater protlt can be made in buying poultry, however, if those engaged in such business will fatten the fowls before killing. Instead of buying to-day und selling to-morrow, there should be clean quarters, with small yards attached, hating feed and water troughs, mid the birds fed on fattening foods, f-o as to increase the weight and secure a Ia'-ger price per pound. Itv allowing time for increasing weight

It becomes an advantage to buy poor birds If they nre in good condition, as the first cost Is less and a greater proportionate weight can be added. Only the frame nnd bony structure are suflicicnt. The food will then increase the weight and the quality will be superior, as birds that aro fattened in a hhort period of time are tender nnd juicy. Such a plan would rid the market of mm h of the inferior poultry that is usually forwarded, and as the cost of producing one pound of poultry should not exceed live cents the adoption of the method would furnish the markets with be tter stock and largely add to the profits of the business. l'rairie Farmer.
