The air was clear and not a cloud obscured the view from Jasper. The eclipse began between 10 and 11 o'clock, and at a little after 11 was total, and continued so for over an hour. Many citizens enjoyed gazing at it. Fatal Runaway. On Monday last Mrs. Peter Gerber, of Ferdinand, took two girls in a buggy and went in the country to gather elderberries. The horse frightened and ran away, throwing them all out violently, Mrs. Cierber striking on her head, producing concussion. She was carried into a fanner's house and died that night. One of the girls sustained a broken shoulder, and the other was seriously injured. Mrs. Gerber was previous to her last marriage the widow of the late Albert Sondennaii, one of the most prominent merchants of the town, and her funeral was attended Tuesday by Mr. Aug. Sondennann, Theo. Sondennann and the Misses Seruiersiieim and Sondennann, Jasper relatives. 'Labor dav w:is celebrated m Jasper Monday night, for the first time in the history of the town. After supper the Union Band played several patriotic airs on the public square, while the "horny-handed sons of toil" were gathering. At about 8 o'cock there was a large gathering of laborer, with torches and banners, and a procession was formed, under the leadership of Capt. Mat. Smith, and marched through the principal streets of the town, shooting roman candles of varied hues, and burning red fire as they inarched. It made a very creditable display. Returning to the Square the people were addressed in short speeches by Senator Mike Sweeney, lion. Andrew M. Sweeney, of Indianapolis, and C. Doane." The speeches were, well received, and the crowd in a good hu roor disjiersed, feeling better for the demonstration.
