power the teacher has in drawing
the pupil to lum. The nuisance
of whispering was emphasized, but no specific rule could be given to
eradicate it lrom the school room. Man' devices wore suggested. lie spoke at length upon the modes of punishment, and stated
that no teacher should strike the child upon the head, pull his ears nor shake him violently. Teachers!
must look within for self-cause of
disorder: then look within the pu
pil. To give attention is difficult,
ncvei thclcss the pupil must he
taught to do so. Therefore interest
them if possible.
He gave an excellent talk upon

subject of tobacco, as a narcotic, he
emphasized the injurious effects up on the system ; also, the lilthinesi

During the week Prof. Welker,
of Ml. Vernon gave a series of talks on "Vocal Music." He spoke of
music as the "coining branch," in
the common school course, and showed the importance of each teacher being able, at least, to read music, lie also had a set of relief

their merits a. id superiority over
Hat maps. The lu-ditutc had the pleasure of listening to a nitinberof papers rend by different members, viz: Miss lielen Rose, whose subject was,
Paeaix Laaa AsaodatiM. The following ü a summary of
the auditing committee's report of the Phenix Loan association, kindly
furnished the Uouiukh by the chairman of the committee, John K. McFall. The committee made a thorough examination of the books up to June 30th, the end of the fiscal year. From this report it can be seen that series "A" will pay out about next May. If the money,
as it is paid in on shares and inter
est can be promptly loaned, it will
pay out in April. Series "11." will probably pay
out in Nov. 1897, if it has as good
management in its loans as it has heretofore had, while SeriesuC"
will run four years yet, probably.
