R. strawberry festival to-morrow night. Be on hands and help it along. "The Washington Post sucgests Minister Eustis, of Louisiana, as an available Democratic candidate for President next year. No one knows how he stands as regards coinage, and it is safe to predict that no one will be elected President next year who i not known to be in favor of the equal coinage of silver and cold, at a ratio ot 16 to 1. The racket." People are "onto the "As will be seen elsewhere, the new town board is now organized. As dutiful servants of the People they should immediately prepare to carry out the instructions of the voters as to water works. Appoint a committee, and let it take with it a machinist who understands his business, and visit a number of places where different systems of watei works are in operation, and after investigation determine which is the best system to give Jasper pure water in abundance. 'The business of the U.S., ac cording to the Government Statistical Report, is 96 per cent, domestic, or transacted entirely in the United States, while only 4 per cent, is foreign business. And yet the gold-bugs would compel the 96 per cent, to be cramped and unprofitable, in order that the 4 per cent, might make fortunes. The 96 per cent, would receive a great impetus by adopting the coinage of Jeff erson and Jackson and Benton, and the benefits would reach every farm house and workshop in the country, but the gold-bug,sfinanciering would help only the gamblers in stocks, millionaires, and persons with fixed large salaries. IQTWhen Gen. Jackson was fighting the British and Indians, he said if he "know what his enemies wanted him to do, it was always safe to do exactly the contrary." The same principle is the correct one to-day for the American People as to any policy which may be desired for this country, by that relic of barbarism, and historical as well as hypocritical and mean enemy of liberty and equality Great Bntain. No other other nation is so despotic and oppressive of human rights as i s England ; none is more coward Iy where wealth is involved ; none has more sneakingly ever interfered with the internal affairs of this .a a w a . countrv than has tintain with our money metals. Is Jail. Ben. and Wilford San ders, near Dubois, got drunk Satur day in that town, and got in a row. Wilford cut Dr. P. L. Coble with a pocket knife to that he is confined to his bed. An affidavit was filed before Esq. Zoeller, and an examination took place Monday, result ing in their being bound over to the July term of circuit court in $500 bond, in default of giving which they are boarding with Sheriff Cassidy. John C. Harder plead guilty to an A. & B. on Ben. Sanders the same day, and Esq. Zoeller fined him 91, with $9.05 costs attached, wh'ch he paid. mTTKe heavy frost Monday night damaged gardens hereabouts considerable, and the prospect of early corn nfl beftqs was cut short.
IKi FIRE. The JatjKr MiwrfactNriif Craatay's Pint Destroy. Friday Meraiaf.
Loss $12,1 Last Friday morning about 2 o'clock fire was discovered in the Manufacturing Company's building, about tho center, and in a few hours ( the building with four cars of wal-, nut, sycamore and gum veneer, three cars of poplar shingles, and about two cars ot drawer bottoms cut to sizes and baled, ready for shipment, were destroyed together with the hno machinery, involving a loss of about ipT'OOO. Most of the finished material would have been shipped this week, as it had been ordered and was inspected and piled near the front of the building for convenience in loading. II jw it caught is a great mystery, as no fire had been in 50 ieet of where it was first seen. On account of the general heavy losses an over the u. a. this year by the Insurance companies upon Planing Mills, Saw Mills, Veneer ing factories, and similar manufac tures, the companies determined as fast as- policies expired to refuse to renew them at any premium, and the Mfg. Co 's. largest insurance ex pired about a month since, and at the time of the fire it had only $2,000 insurance, $1,500 in the North British and Mercantile, and $500 in the Washington, and these would have expired next month. The Companies are lepresented in Wilson's agency, and the adjuster is hereto examine the loss. I lie companies had each forbidden the renewal of the insurance at the expiration next month, but thev got caught too soon. The Manufacturing Company is an incorporation, but the shares were bought in till all were owned by Messrs. Ferd. Schneider, Frank Seibert and F. Kasser. It was doing a flourishing and profitable busa . aa , t mess, ana it is probable the owners will re-build, if favorable shipping rates can be secured from the railroad companv. Otherwise the own ers are likely to engage in some bus iness that does not require any shipping, or establish a plant where rates can be had trom orae other railroad. If started here it will be on a much larger scale than heretofore, and would furnish many cars of nght and give employment to more men. it rates cannot be se cured a small plant will likely be started bv others to supplv the de mand of the Jasper Desk Company. The matter will be determined in a few days. The loss to Jasper, should it not be re-built, will be considerable, as it gave steady em ployment to 12 men. This is one of the instances where a liberal spir it by railroad officers would conduce to the profit of the road, and juild up a permanent business for it. Gev. Chase Dead. ' Ex-Gov. Ira P. Chase died of ery sipelas, after two weeks sickness at Lubec. Me., on Saturday last. He had gone to Maine on a preaching tour in the interest of the Christian church. His body was brought back to Indianapolis, where it was buried yesterday. Peace to his ashes Gov. Chase was a man of forceful character acd great influence, and had filled a large space in Indiana's history. The CMty S. S. Ceaveitiei Was held at Huntingburg last Sun day, and was fairly well attended, the people of the city being present m good numbers, four townships only were represented Patoka, Cass, Madison and Bainbridge. The choirs of the M. E. and Salem congregations furnished excellent music. The Convention was called to order by President Ernst J. Bleraker, who requested Mr. D. L. lionner, oi vincennes, to occupy the chair. Mr. Bonner accepted and made an excellent presiding of ficer. One thing remarkable, rather in a Sunday School Convention, was that every one who had been as signed a subject was present, and presented their topics in an inter esting manner, thus adding materi ally to the success of the conven tion. Mr. R. M. Milhurn, Esq., was elected President of the Convention, and of the Association, for the next year, and Mr. Elias Katterhenry Secretary. An executive committee of one from each township was chosen, with instructions to endeavor to interest all the townships in the work. Tho question of time and place for next convention was brought up, and after discussion was referred to executive committee to decide in the future, as interest developed. I he hope was expressed that at the next convention every township i. ..tt i ... . ir in tho county will be renreacnteef, .. IIVAt W1ITUIUUII lillill win Jiniiii I and much good accomplished.
