JAIFER. DUBOIS COVJTTY, INDIANA, 'auras' at tH foitoct at Jptr Indiana, for raaamiatioa tkrosi tat wall aerona diu matitr FRIDAY, FEBUARY 8, 1S95. kWGov. Matthews has had a bill introduced into the Indiana Senate to prevent winter horse racing in Indiana. It is aimed at Kohy where Chicago gamblers congregate We wonder it tnev are anv worse than the gamblers in life's neces sities on the Indianapolis Board o Trade. Senator McCutcheon, of Evansville, has introduced in the In diana Senate a bill to change this judicial circuit, by making the 1st circuit composed of Gibson and Posey counties, so that Evansville may "have a Judge who will draw a year's salary for six months' work, and be elected by anderburgcoun tv only. The Courier is not at present informed what county is at tached to this circuit to take the plaee of Gibson, but hopes the bill will not pass, as there are enough judicial officers now, if their labors were properly distributed. It is surprising to note the conspiracy between National Bunk ers, Boards of Trade, whose mem bers are nearly all indebted to the banks, and therefore under com pulsion, and the gold gamblers in Wall street, to create an apparent sentiment in favor of retiring and destroying all gr'enbacks, and handing the people over, bound hand and foot, to the mercy of the Bankers, and subject to their will as to what wages may be paid mechanics, laborers, vfcc, and what price the producers shall get for wheat, corn, cotton, sugar, potatoes, pork, beef, Ac. This condition follows the adoption of the President's financial policy as certain as night follows day, and it will not be a good one for the common People. Riflt, Ym Are. Our Senator, Mike A Sweeney is not all fun as some thought during the campaign last fall. He is a busy man and is making a useful member of the General Assembly. He has already introduced a bill to regulate freight charges on railroads ; j a bill to reduce the railroad passenger fare to two cents & mile, and another to compel insurance com panies to pay the full amount of policy in case the loss is equal to the face of the policy, and the full amount of partial loss where the face of the policy is greater than the amount of loss- Cannelton Telephone. Dements, Staii Fast. Democrats who believe in principles as the foundation of Republican government should not be discouraged, and desert their party. Remember .it is generally "darkest just before dawn." And though Cleveland has turned traitor to the platform on which he was chosen, and has been able to take with him, by his personal influence, trusted leaders like Carlisle and Voorhees, and others, God still reigns, liberty will triumph, truth is mighty, and though their defection in this congress may cost the party the next election, as it did the last, the Democratic party is the only one which will do justice to all the People and they will again arise in their might and put true Democrats at the helm of government, and preserve constitutional Kberty for America as our forefathers ordained it with "equal justice to all men, exclusive privileges to none," as proclaimed by Jefferson, the founder of American Democracy. OEN. M. D. MANSON DEAD. A Patriot Here et Twa Wars. Gen. Mahlon D. Manson, of Crawfordsville, known all over In diana as a patriot soldier in both the Mexican war, and the war of the rebellion, was stricken with paraly sis while traveling on a Monon train near Frankfort, Ind., on Monday afternoon, and died that night at a hotel he was carried to in Frank fort. He was 7G years old, and car ried the scars, and felt the effects of wounds received in battle in both wars. Gen. Manson was a noble-hearted and noble-minded man, as all who had the pleasure of knowing mm, oi wnaiever party, aummea. He had served a term or two in Congress, had been State Auditor of Indiana, Collector of Internal Revenue during Cleveland's first term, was one of the commissioners of the State Soldiers' Monument, and after his retirement from Congress served his neighbors as road supervisor. In every position he acquitted himself creditably, and won new honors. May the country have many like him.

Thov claim that verv few of the marriages are elopements. The parties generally have their pa rents' consent, the object generally being to avoid the expense of a wed dine. Theso justices claim that $4,000 to 5,(X)0 are annually col lected for marriage licenses, which now go into 'the county treasury and about the same amount goes into the pockets of the magistrates New Albany Ledger. The Yincenncs paper mill last year bought 3.200 tons of straw for which thev paid $9,300 to the far mers of Knox county. Thirty-five men were given employment who received in wages $11,000. 1 hin of this and then look at the thous ands of tons of straw that is burnec in Pike county, when it might through such a medium, be turnet: into dollars. We wish that such an industry could be started in Peters burg: it would pay all concerned. Who will start the movement; Petersburg News. Block Factory Burnkd. About 7 o'clock Wednesday evening the people of this town were aroused bv the alarm of fire. It was the Block Factory of John Baunii'aert ner. ine nre department was soon at work but the hre was under such headway, and owing to the disad vantages under which the department labored, on account of severe cold and snow that it could not be stopped. The contents and ma chinery are thought to be a total loss. It is estimated at $10,000. Insured for about $2,000. Rock port Democrat. Enumeration ok Voters. The township trustees will have a task to perform this year which they are required to do once every six years. It is that of enumerating the voters in the various townships. tins work can be done any time between now and the first of July, and will show the name and age of all male persons over the age of twenty-one.
