Memorial Exercises. On. Jan. 18, 1887, John Jordan Upchurch, the founder of the A. O. U. W., died in St. Louis, Mo., and all over the U. S. and Canada the Work
men have Memorial Exercises on the 18th of Jan. Jasper Lodge will have an open meeting at their hall to-night, to which the general public and ladies are invited. Bros. W. S. Hunter and W. E. Cox have consented to deliver addresses on the occasion, and the brethren invite a
large attendance. Committees. Speaker Adams, of. the Indiana House of Reps, on Tuesday appointed the coniniitteeg of the House, who will shape the legislation of this session. He dealt out to Messrs Stewart and Porter from this district as follows : Stewart Prison South, Foes and Salaries, Natural Resources, Congressional Apportionment. PorterPrison South, Rights and Privileges, Medicine, Health and Vital Statistics, Legislative Apportionment. There are 46 committees, with
394 members, so that with 100 Representatives it gives about four places to eaoh member, and each of the members of this district are on four committees.

He shows that the present State
debt is i7,03ti,;io.r-', with annual interest charges of 1257,720. He recommends the refunding of a portion of the debt bv long time bonds
at a low interest, and a lew of
three cents on each f 100 as a sink
ing fund to pay the debt as it falls
due. He also recommends a reduction of two cents in the State common
school levy, on the grounds that taxes should be reduced. This would reduce taxes in the more wealthy counties, but in such counties as Dubois it would necessitate an increase of taxes four times the amount of reduction, or else a prent
shortening in the length of terms of
the common schools, rendering plaintiff's affidavit venue is changed them comparatively worthless in all to Warrick county. Ihf smnllnr rvmnttnc Tho flnttoiPD Muri k'i'pffimr va A f?-..

TSeveral hundred hills for acts have already been introduced in the Legislature. The Senate has passed bills appropriating $100,000 to pay legislative expenses, and one appropriatihg $48,000 to repay Gov. Matthews for the expenses incurred by him in paying the brave "sojer boys" during the strike. Senator Sweeney has introduced a bill to compel insurance companies to nav
losses when fires are caused by casualties. The Senate authorized the buying of 58 copies of the Statutes of" Indiana at $16.50 eaoh, to enable Senators to study some, and now some of the publicans who
voted to thus spend nearly $1,000 of the People's money for their own private gain, are kicking themselves awfully. The "Alma Mater." TheCouniER has received a copy of this periodical, now edited by Rev. Clement Klingel, O. S. B., 'formerly one of Jasper's school boys. It is published "by the Benedictine Fathers of St. Meinrad Abbey, Spencer county. It presents a verv cred
itable appearance and Father Klingel has succeeded in securing a corps of able, interesting, talented, and well-known writers, so that it will be a literary, family periodical of the first class, and it is published monthly at only $1 a year, and is therefore within the financial reach of nearly every head of a family even in hard times. While its inculcations will be decidedly Catholic, yet its corps of contributors are men and women who will make it interesting for the general literary read
er. For instance the world-wide poets M. A. Fitzgerald and Charles J. 0'Malley will contribute poems for the February No. Michael D. Fansler, a lawyer of Loganport, will furnish an article on "America's Workingmen ; " "Loss aud Gain," by the able priest Neusius, discusses the growth of the Catholic church in the ü. S. Dubois county's former county Superintendent of schools, Hon. Andrew M. Sweeney, now President of the State Life Ins. Co., discusses the "Issues of 1894" in an article on '-The Business Situation." There are many other interesting topics, as well as sketches of travel, and novellettes which will make the magazine an
interesting one in every family. For copies address "Alma Mater," St. Meinrad, Ind.
