Hoard ot Education, lhe same line of questions has been retained

during a period of thirtv years,

hence, applicants for graduation and teachers' licenses might do well to give them proper consideration.

Teaching as a Steppiag-Stone.

It is not the making of teaching a

stepping-stone that does the most hurt, but the failure of most of us

to step nuicklv enough. If more of

the incompetent would step, it

would be better for the schools. To make teaching a stepping'

stone is entirely right, provided we

have enough self-respect to do our

duty while we remain in the work.

The teacher who conscientiously

docs his work who takes interest

in it and prepares himself for it-

mav, without hurt, quit it when he

chooses. He who makes teaching

a mere shift, sitting out so much time for so much money, without any desire for doing good or fear of doing evil, not only lacks the spirit of a teacher, but he also lacks the

common decency of manhood. These are strong words, and we mean them as intensely as any we ever wrote. Who is guilty, lut him wince.

it takes place, and it will not do its

work unless the craving is satisfied.

The periodical drinker, or the

dipsomaniac, and the daily drinker are scientifically the same. One has educated his brain to demand

alcohol everv dav, the other at long

er intervals. With the dipsomaniac

the craving for liquor often disap pears during his period of sobriety

This periodical desire of the brain

for stimulant does not at hrst recur as a craving for liquor. It makes itself felt under (the most common

symptom of its return) a passionate

desire to go somewhere, a longing for excitement, for change, for the theater, for a trip to the country or to the city, for any form of amusement out" of the usual course. The

victim is nervous and becomes ir

ritable.

The wives of periodical drinkers

learn to know when the period o

drinking is coming on. Then come

the tears, and the pleadings, and

the broken promises. The debauch follows, the patient undergoes the

unspeakable tortures of sobering 11 regains his health, and again i

practically free from the desire for

drink until the return of his period

If mental impression were of avail

the remorse which the dipsomaniac

suffers after every debauch would

cure him. W. E. Brigham. Exert the Power ef Banded Good.

AT THE WORLD'S FAIRJJ

If Cod has placed us in more elevated stations, we owe him more loyal service. There is a tendency, which is not according to God's

ways, that as men ascend in society they sever themselves from their

ellow men, do not feel the Fame

sympathy with their wants, and are afraid to come in contact with the

masses, even for the furtherance of noble causes. In the temperance warfare 1 make a special appeal to

men of allluence and influence.

I'hev can do much for us, and we

need theiraid. Archbishop Ireland.

These are times when the liquor

rade needs to know its friends and

requires tlieir boldest anu most

zealous efforts in its behalf. The aggressiveness of the prohibitionists and other foes of the trade was

never more determined and earnest than it is to-day, and the liquor trallic was never in greater peril.
