DESERTING Rc-i nblican frnatora and States Quitting Their Tarty. Senator Jmrpi Cunr Cintrrnatlaii-n Farmntly Sewrn ltrl.llHa Ilubol Telia -Why -Othr Will Soon Follow. Threatened llrvakup Ih the North Weat. The action of Senator Jones of Nevada tn formally leaving the Republican party has created a sensation in iolitical circle und started speculation as to its effects on the futuru history of parties. Hit were confincl to Senator Jones alono it would not bo so significant, but BcconipanyinK facts indicate that it is but tho first step in a General niovo to take all tho northwestern states out of the Republican jrty. T its plan is unfoldwl by Senator Dubois of Idaho in an interview communting on Senator Jones' action Senator Jones himself iissigtn as his reason for leaving the Republican party the fact that he has despaired of ever getting from it any legislation in favor of silver. He says his old party i-; hopelessly wedded to the eastern money power and at its dictation has decided on the siuglo gold standard as tho permanent financial policy of this country if it should be enthused with control. Before leaving Washington last week, Senator Jones published an elaborate address to his constituents setting forth these views with the clearness and boldness of statement for which he is remarkable. Intellectually he is admitted to be the ablest of tho Republican senaters und his loss will be deeply felt by the party. Mean the Lota of Many States. Before leaving for his home in Idaho recently, Senator Dubois was asked for his views as to tho effect on parties of Senator Jones' dechir.it ion of war. Mr. DulHiis replied in the following significant language: "Senator Jones is not to be criticised for his action. His motives were honest. Nor can it be said that his step lacked wisdom. I know what his feelings are. Nor do we agree in some matters. If we did I should bo with him today in his departure from the Republican party. Senator Jones haf lost all hope of the emanation of any irood to silver from the Republicans. I have not. If I hail I would go with Senator Jones. The only differencebetween us is that he lost confi dence sooner than I. For myself I shall r." to my suite and do my utmost for Republican success in thus campaign. We have a senator to elect and my energies will be turned to electing a legislature which will send to the senate a free silver Republican. But the Republican party generally should take notice by this action of Senator Jones. It means much to the northwest and foreshadows the coming action of myself, Teller, Wolcott, tho whole host and herd of northwest Republicans unless there is a change. Warning te Kepantlcana. "I am willing to say now and those who take an interest may guide themselves by it that I will join Senator Jones between now and 18 unless the Republican party declares for free silver as absolutely free as gold. I mean free silver of both gold and silver at a ratio of 10 to 1. There need be no doubt as to my statement. If the Republicans do not declare for the free coinage of both gold and silver at a ratio of 16 to 1, I shall join Jones and Stewart with the Populist, and I know at least six senators who have similar intentions, and it will cost the Republicans four states. It has cost them Nevada already; it will cost them a quartet of commonwealths besides. And if they can stand it, why, we'll have to. On the belief that the Republicans will doclare for free silver, I tight iu the camftaigti now fairly on. If I am wrong, f no such silver declaration is made by the party, I shall leave it. The effect of Senator Jones' action is hard to measure in advance. He is one of the strong figurea iu our party. In my own state, as, indeed, in all about him, including California, there is no man whose exaninle would have a more profound effect. The Populist .party of the entire west is stronger today by 23 per cent than the dar before Senator Jones made this change." Deadencr on the Old Tarty. The significance of the above is that it foreshadows a purely Republican loss. The states threatening rebellion tire and always have been Republican states. It may be said therefore that what is Republican loss is Democratic gain. Democratic supremacy in the nation, so far from being endangered, is aided by the secesülon of the northwest to a third Erl us it wcaKcus the principal rival of iinocracy. It means tho loss of th .t many votes in the electoral college .o tho Republicans and these votes are m necessary to elect a Democratic president. As to Senator Dubois' expect tions of a Republican declaration for free silver, which he makes the contingency for his allegiance, he might as well cot t id r himself out already, as there is hut tho slightest probability of such action. The Republican party .s in the grip of the eastern money power and najst do its bidding or dissolve The men nio control it reside in tho ea and if compelled to choose between the north and western states and those which it lipids east of the Mississippi, the choice will soon be made. The em barrassinent of the party is equal to that of the Englidi king who was stcrnlv told to cliooto between his duty and h, head. While a declaration against fren silver, it will .reason, will lo.-e it a few states, a declaration iu favor thereof would lose it many more. With a wildcat hi front and a tig r iu the rear, th. huntsman i at a Iihs to know which way to run. But with tins Republican, the terror in pired by the silver kin; will yield to the dniad of the still more powerful gold barons. S..IHH lniln IIMorr. Senator Dubois, iu tho alwvo quoted Interview, rather hints at than divulges an the racts lelilml this interesting sevwanco. of . party relations. Those who

ahum tho ojiifldenjo of Senator Teller and other Republican "ilver senators could add a chapter of startling significance. At ono time this summer Senator Teller had made up his mind to announco formally iu tho senate his withdrawal from the Republican party. 'I his was temporarily postHmcd. But ho after stated publicly that lie would support no candidate for tho presidency who was not in favor of free silver und whose record from the beginning wo undoubtedly in that direction. Ho specified by name the kind of men ho would not eupi rt for the presidency, including Mckinley, Harrison and Reed. There is no doubt that tho whole contingent of Republican silver senators have made up their minds to leave the party unless it declares for free silver in lbllt. Jones, knowing this will not be done, decides to leave now. The others uro sure to follow in due time and it means the certain defeat and eventual disintegration of the Republican party. lit' the meantime, no such danger threatens Demociaey. None of its states or senators are leaving it on this or any other issue. Just tho ievero of what the Republicans have beii boastfully claiming for some timu is true. L 'V. V 1 u. ... - " V J was really the clattering of hoofs that followed the galloping iram tneir own ranks of their former staunch adherents iu the northwestern states. Organized labor has never tusked anything in reason of Indiana Democracy that has not been gladly granted. All tho legislation of that kind on tho statute books is its work. Tho Democracy is und always has leen the friend of laItnr. It. i-nnll nut lu ntluru'iso. as it is chiefly eomjiosed of workinginf n. The party has always been the refuge or the humble and tho lowly and ever ready to extend a helping hand to the needy and oppressed. The Democrats of Maryland aro making it exceedingly warm for the chief of tho senatorial traitors whose treachery to Democratic principles prevented the full measure of reform promised the people All these fellows will bo weeded out from the Democratic party us soon as they can be reached, and the only regret is that their terms are not all to end with the incoming legislatures. Vote-buying, which was formerly the most important Republican industry in the state, has disappeared with Repub lican protection. With the incoming of perfectly honest and untimidnted voting, it wm tie ooserveo, ino suite oi imiiana has been easily Democratic. The state has never been honestly carried by the Republicans since 1871. Every man or woman in Indiana who sends children to school has reason to be grateful to the Democratic party for the present Schoolbook law. The amount it has saved in money und trouble has been a great boon to Indiana school patrons. That law broke up one of the meanest rings that ever plundered tho people for its own iMjiiefit. Tho Remiblicau nartv. Ii.ivintr bnilt up the whole brood of trusts, is now trying to unload the odium of them on the Democratic party. But for Republican protection there would bo no sugar trust, for instance, to stand in tho way of honest tariff reform. MeKiiileyism was as fruitful of trusts as a dead dog is of maggots. The Republican party is responsible for George H. Pulluiaii and the whole system which breeds such men. Ho votes its ticket, its laws nourish him, he contributes to its campaign fund and is its legitimate offspring. Such conditions as pervade at Pullman wero miheard of before the long reign of Republicanism. Carnegie has lost favor with the Republican party, not because he sold rotten armorplate to the government, but because he b& weakened in his support of protection. I was that vile system which made tho Carnegies possible. Republicanism, like Carnegie's plates, is full of "blowholes." Democratic legislation killed Pinkertonism iu Indiana. It also abolished "pluck-mo" stores. It also provided the employes' liability bill and other useful measures demanded by organized labor. These things will bo remembered by laboring men when they go to the polls next fall. The Democratic law which makes the big corporations pay their just share of tho tax burdens is distasteful to Republicans. They would repeal it and remit the state back to the system formerly prevailing when the small fish were caught while tho big fish slipped through. Remember, that without tho aid of the whole Republican membership the few Democratic traitors iu the senate could not have obstructed tariff reform. The Republicans wero the British, while the "masquerading Democrats" played the role of Benedict Arnold. What position aro tho Republicans going to take ou the tariff question, anyway? Will they demand tho repeal of the now bill and insist on reopening the whole subject in congress? It is almost time they wero announcing their intentions. Republic! lism in tho far west is for free silver, ''n the cast it is for the single gold standard. Anything to get votes. They promise the ieople whatever they want, provided, only in return that they will give them the offices. The Democratic state platform enumerates the great reforms effected by tho party in the interest of latior and tho people generally. Tho list is long und coters n series of measures of the highest importance. Tom Tli'i'i" rt'Pi'iiflv mumixl tlin Pnnnli. licm campt gn in Maine with his jaw. If any one wants to know what little excuse the Republican party has for continuing iu existence, he should read that speech. By virtue of a Democratic law Pullman now ins to pay for tho privilege of running his ears through Indiana. In Other -tatcs he goes free, its he did here nihil r L pah icm legislation. Th.uiks to Hie Democrat to party JoIiiiiin D.iveniKirt mid his myrmidons will no ( .miiwrvise elections. The states will ie.jul.ito such affairs without federal intei lerente. Republican prosieots wano as tho campaign ntogmsses. That lmrty, like a yotmg robin, is biggest when first born.
