10If the tariff differences between the two parties is merely one
of schedules, the higher it is put the better. Make a Chinese wall around the country until the people rise in their might and tear it away entirely, and raise all the revenue necessary for Government by a tax on incomes. The trasts are inviting that extreme by their present actions in buying Senators. "Cleveland has appointed three
lawyers, neither . ot whom ever
worked at manual labor a day in tlieir lives, but have always been favored scions of wealth, receiving their salaries from large corporations, to investigate the recent labor controversies in Illinois. It will be like a wolf investigating the plaint of a lamb that the ewe didn't
give milk. The. lamb being tender
will be eaten up. It does seem as
though one representative of labor
might have been placed on the com
mission, to at least have borne an appearance of fairness. The commission is composed of Carrol D.
Wrieht and John D. Keman, of
New York, and Nicholas E. Worth
ington, a local Judge of circuit court
at Peona, Ills. J9The present indications are that a Democratic majority in Con
gress is going to permit a combine
of traitorous Senators to commit tue
party to a protective tariff in di
rect opposition to the Chicago platform, the will of Democrats generally, and their own pledges to the people. If honesty in politics means anything, and party platforms are not mere "rot," and telling lies to gain votes is to be condemned, every Democrat who votes for it ought to be retired to private life, if a letter man can be found to take his place. "Protection," as proposed by the Senate bill, is base robbery of the people, taking a poor man's monev and making it a donation to
the rich trusts. The Democratic
masses will repudiate it every time, and finally find honest men who will represent them truly. Tbc New VataatiM.
The valuation for taxation, as
fixed by the county Board of Review, and published in theCouiUKit to-day, should be preserved by the
citizens of the county generally, as
many frequently want to know the value of taxables in the various townships. It will be seen that the
total is increased over last year
$36,949, although all the townships except Harbison and Ferdinand show decrease. The increase in the towns of Ferdinand, Haysville,
Jasper and Huntingburg more than
made up for the falling off among
the farmers. It is noticeable, also, that in personal property Jasper,
with its smaller area and population, returns more than the city A
Huntingburg. "Who would have
thunk it?" The decrease in Birds
eye was occasioned by the big fire
there last year. But for that 1 would have shown an increase. I must be remembered that the rail road and telegraph valuation is ye
to be added to this to make the
grand total of the tax duplicate. Railroad ExcwrHioiiH.

Packed like sardines in a box were the people who crowded the
opera houso Saturday night to hear
President Debs, ot tho A. U. U., at
his home discuss the great strike.
Tho theater never held such crowd
and hundreds were turned away.
Tho utmost enthusiasm prevailed
and when the A. H. I . leader ap
peared at b o'clock there was ap
plause that lasted several minutes.
- . . r
The aired father and mother ol
Debs and his wife occupied a box.
President Scholtz, of the local
lodge, presided and introduced Debs
as the greatest labor leader of tho age. A mighty shout greeted this statement. Debs plunged at once
into the strike.
It was a crisis, he said, brought
about (1) by the inhuman cruelty
and oppression of Pullman toward his employes: CO, by the railways
deciding to stand by Pullman in his oppression; (8), by an understand
ing among the railway managers that it was necessary to crush the rising American railway union. He
believed lirmlv in the principle ot
arbitration all his life, and did not favor a strike until the gauntlet was thrown down and an effort made to crush organized labor. Although
not in favor of strikes, there was a
time when not to strike meant degredation and dishonor; this was that time. There was not a star in the American flag, from Lexington to
Vorktown, that did not mean a
strike a strike against tyranny.
(Applause). The existence of all labor unions to-dav was an evidence
of oppression in the past. Oppression gave them birth. The loco
motive engineers, the parent of all railway organizations, was born on
the Michigan Central road in 1803, and its founder had told him per-
onallv that it was started because
the men were treated like serfs.
Referring to Pullman, Debs said
arbitration or investigation was the
last thing Pullman wanted, as that
would disclose a set of facts that would shock the American people.
The workmen, he said, besides bej t . - A ! ...
mg reduced m wages uiree nines the past year, were treated with
supercillious contempt, and the men only struck after three of their com
mitteemen who waited on Pullman were discharged. It was work and
starve, and they thought they may
as well starve and strike. (Applause). He had no apology for the part the A. K. U. took in the strike. The Pullman employes were their brothers and it was not only a sympathy strike, but a humanity strike. Some of Pullman's acts, which the A. R. U. would show up before the president's investigation
committee, would make a decent
hyena hang his head in shame. It
was the only strike in American his-

the Phone line on through to your town also. Dubois wants it, too. I think you and I can help these people out with very little effort, and if your people will agree to take it'at Celestine, or Dubois, I am quite sure the line can be completed. We have it now to Schnellville, and it does not require a great deal ol money to build the line, and they are a great advantage to these small inland towns. Debs declared the A. K. U. was
not responsible for the rioting.
He greatly regretted there was
any lawlessness.
He was no anarchist. He loved order and the American
lag. He had the strike won fairly and

Whatever action might be taken
at the coming A. K. IT. convention the strike on Pullman would go on. There was no ending to them.
Pullman must be whipped. lie said that when a strike was
ordered it invited lawlessness, hut as there was never a strike without a cause, why should not the cor
porations take their share of the responsibility of rioting?
When sectionmen were cut to
cents a day, as thev were on
the Louisville & Nashville, the railway managers who made that cut
were the real anarchists. (Ap
plause).
In conclusion l)cm ma: "J have a feeling, my friui.ds and neighbors, in talking to you that 1 cannot describe. It is a pleasure to return and hear your applause and your 'well done.' I have mado mistakes, may always do so, but I will always do what I think nca.cst right and shall always follow where my conscience dictates. If any penalty shall be in store for mo for my acts during the strike I will accept it as a man." Of the future of labor Debs said : "So far as I am concerned I do not believe I will ever again become identified with any great strike movement. I will devote what influence I may have toward educating the laborer to use the ballot intelligently." Bticklen' Arnica Salve. The Best Salvo in the world for cuts,
