I'ertMH of tU Rswim Wheu L. Cftlpuruius Piso waa appointed governor of Macedonia for

one year, ho Urow for his outfit from tko public troasury 18,000,000 I sesterces, or 150,000. Ho did not I want tho money forthat purpose; 1 everything required by a proconsul was supplied to him by tho province. Pino simply took the money for him 'self and loaned it out iu Rome at I high interest. C. Verres was charged by Cicero with having robbed Sicily of 350,000 in three years, besides JWiiu tnimiuio nuino Ul mu a 1 it rtltl a a f V J f aMV practically admitted Lus guilt by retiring from Rome without attempt jUg rtUy defense. Cicero, when governor of the j-oor provinco of Cilicia, Ifotindi himself tho richer m one year 000, and ho was perhaps tho only procousul who over handed over "t his- surplus to the state. Thero can bo no doubt that Cicero and the younger Pliny received large sums from their clients while those clients were still livinc. Balbus is not likely to have secured tho argument "Pro Balbo" for a mere trifle. And tho gratitudo of Sicily for the prosecution of Verres undoubtedly took a very substantial form. Apart from all such honoraria, it is record ed that Cicero and tho younger Pliny received legacies from clients to tho amount of 170,000. Gibbon tells us, on tho authority of Olympiodorus, that several of tho richest senators had an incomo of 100,000 a year, without computing tho stated provision of corn and wine. New York Advertiser. Remedy Fur Dump Walla. The process consists in using two washes or solutions for covering the surface of the walls ono composed of castilo soap and water and ono of alum and water. The proportions are three-quarters of a pound of soap to a gallon of water and half a pound of alum to 4 gallons of water, both substances to be perfectly clean and dry, and tho temieraturo of the air not above 25 deirrees F. when the compositions are applied. Tho first, or soap wash, should be laid on when boiling hot with a flat brush, taking care to form a froth on the brickwork. This wash should remain 24 hours, so as to become dry and hard before tho second, or alum wash, is applied, which should be done in the same manner as the first Tho temperature of this wash when applied may be CO or 0 degrees F., and this also should remain 24 hours before a second coat of soap wash is put on. These coats aro to be applied alternately until the walls are made impervious to water. The alum and soap thus combined form an insolu ble compound, filling the pores of the masonry and entirely preventing the water from eutenuir tho wall. Architect and Building. The Lrgloa of Ilunnr. M. Ambrose Thomas, on whom tho grand cross formerly grand cordon of the Lesion of Honor was be stowed on the occasion of the thou sandth representation of "Mignon," is ono of six civilians who at present hold that order. Meissonier is the only artist who has ever held this distinction. Tho number of grand crosses is limited to 60, but for a long time past the number actually hold ing the decoration has varied be tween 40 and 50. v hen tho Legion of Honor was created in 1S02 by Gen eral Bonaparte, then first consul, tho holders of the grand cordon wero en titled to draw 800 a year. At tho restoration this amount was reduced by oue-half. Nowadays tho mem bers of the Legion of Honor receive fVi fnllnu-inte nnrmitu! TTniirhts oin. 5,w von. r.tr...nti.1ttfi A( .
