would accrue to all the people of the town, as they all must have J light of some kind, and therefore

the domestic and commercial lights

sold would pav for all the street

lighting, and relieve the taxpayers'

of that expense. It ouirht not to

be in the power of anv private cor-.

juration or company to charge the

people exhorbitant rates tor lights, j or to make a speculation off of the!

town treasury for public lighting.1 Any one who' will take the pains to' investigate will be convinced that"

the 75 to 100 paid by various'

towns per year for each arc light, is

about double what it should be, atter allowing a fair profit. '

Again , Jasper is peculiarly well

situated to run a plant cheaply. Steam coal at $1 a ton, and the lo-1 cation on Patoka river, where no, doubt an arrangement could bej

made with Eckert brothers for a' niee and water nower from their,

dam, on the north side of the river,

U Meet at Rwkpwt, ImJ., May 24, 184. The Democratic delegates of said

circuit will meet at Rockport, In

diana, on Thursday, May zjimm, for the mimose of nominating a

Prosecuting Attorney for said circuit.

John Ukamelspaciier, Chairman D. C. C. C. Thos. Duncan, Chairman G. C. C. C. M. L. Heathman, Chairman P. C. C. C. An Electric Light and Power Plant.

Now that a number of Jasper cit

izens are again considering tue feasibility of establishing an Electric Light and Power Plant, by the incorporation, in Jasper, it is well to consider the advantages that may accrue to the town from the successful ojMjration of such a plant by the town. As at present situated factories of all kinds must be located along the river banks, in order to obtain an unfailing supply of water for steam purposes. The inconvenience and expense of this fact is shown bv examples of the brewery and of the Union Flour Mills each of which have been often put to considerable trouble for the want of an ttlmndnnt sunnlv of water for

their steam engines". With a good

pWtric Dower plant, located near

Patoka, and their machinery run by mnters. this dillicultv would be

rnmlilv overcome. The want of

snnipthini? of this kind has no doubt

prevented the establishment here of manv small factories using from

im tn !H) horse power.

Another advantage is that electric nnuor riuld thus be furnished all

over the town, wherever manufac-

turers of any kind desired to use it, 1 nt sinexnense below what steam

luiwer would cost. This would no

doubt lead to the establishment of manv small factories, of various

hinds in .Jasner. and the C'oflMKi:

believes that ten small factories, employing say ten men each, engaged in the manufacture of ten different sii tides, would be better for the general prosperity of the town than one large factory employing KH) men, engaged in only one branch ol manufacturing, because a depression in anv one branch would not affect all the others to so great an extent, besides, Jasiwr cannot exjecl to secure the location of large factories while it has but one railroad outlet. The owners of such will not subject themselves to the risks of transjnirtation afforded by one road. Hut a hundred small factories would soon bring to us another railroad, as they would so increase business done bv rail as to justify a division of it, with a fair prospect of a profit on the capital necessary to give us a connection with other great trunk lines. A railroad from Jasper to Gosport would connect us with the B., O. & S. W., the E. & It., the Pennsyl-

irwl fliutrilmin it hlpm!' tn

our ).eople. Upon the subject of.autheMmet"' this water power the Coukikk's at-1 ""Jt.rirJ-of

tention has been called to an opportune article in the American Machinist of March 22d. It is good authority on such matters, and says : "There is no doubt that the growing use of electricity, will in the end, materially help the trade in water wheels tliat has been rather hardly pushed by the steam engine. Water nowers are beincr. and will be.

turned to account that would remain dormant but for electric distribution of power. Where mills

and factories cannot be well located.

the energy of the falling water may be taken by electricity to conven

ient positions, and to some extent

this is and will be done. 1 Ins will, however, cut but a small figure in

the manufacture and sale of steam

engines probably not enough of a

titnire ever to be noticeaiue. it

will in some instances provide for

locating shops and factories that

would not otherwise be built, ami provide for the lighting of places that would otherwise grovel in the

darkness of cas. or oil lamps.

Electricity will help the water wheel

without, to any appreciable extent

injuring the steam engine."
