Dubois county to the front of coin munities in all that pertains to hat)
piness and business prosperity, and
in making Jasper the jewel of the State for healthfiilness, and business activity.
1 he records of the Hoard of Health show hat the deaths in Jasper in
1.V.I2 were 1(5, and in 1S!K! onlv 11,
or only four-lift! s of one percent, of
population in 1X5)2, and 11-20 of
one per cent, in w.ui. Tins is a
record for the health of the town
equaled by no place of 2,000 inhab
itants or over in Southern Indiana,
and demonstrates that as a health
resort it is up to the standard of the
most, iavoreu places in .aniornia. The citizens of the town have become so accustomed to its beautiful surroundings tbat they hardly realize themselves4 the blessings they receive from being permitted to reside in so healthful a locality, surrounded by so many elevating and energizing characteristics, and with such grand business
possibilities as arc patent immediately to all outside business men who come to Jasper for pleasure, health, rest or business. Jasper is situated on the banks of I'atoka river, one of the most rapid Mowing streams of the West, with a fall averaging about six feet to the mile, thus carrying off with each Spring rise of the water all deleteri-
ous accumulations, and leavum its
mnks in a clean, healthful condi
tion. This accounts for the healthy appearance of residents of Jasper
generally, and for the small ratio of sickness and mortality prevailing within itslintits. Thestreani abounds
with the best fish the spirited and lighting black bass and sun fish, cat fish, suckers and buffaloes predominating, and affording opportunities
also furnishes an abr fiance of wa
ter for manufactories, and healthful
and unfailing wells all through the town, as it percolates through the
sand underlying the earth from 20
io .'50 feet deep. On its bosom, at
the annual rises thousands of saw
logs of the linest quality of white
oan, walnut and yellow poplar an floated to the Jasper market. Jasper is surrounded by beautifu mounds, in many of which an ex
eeiiem arucie oi seilll-DlOCK COill IS mined, and delivered at any place in town at 50 cts. per ton for pea or
steam coal, which is largely used,
instead ot sand, as foundations un
der the brick side-walks. Run ofi
mine coal, and lump, is delivered at
the court house for the county at
f 1.07' per ton: and to to citizens
generally for domestic use, at $1.75;
per ton. it is cheaply mined by
drifting under the side of a hill.
The veins are from four to four feet,
six luetics in inicKuess, ana mere
are seven mines worked near the
or and received bv the Commission
ers in June, 1S-17. In 1S75 this was enlarged to nearly double its former size, costing 'the countv $3,685 more, and the contractor,
Mr. E. A. IIoeliL'esanir. nearlv
$1,000 from his own pocket. It
made a very commodious building
ior me. tune.
Tho county jail and sheriffs' resi
dence was built in 1SG9, by E. A. Hooligcsang and George Friedman, contractors, at' a cot of 3.G20.
This was enlarged in 1893 by the addition of a stone jail house," with eight roomy iron cells, with double bunks, at a total cost of about $7,500, and giving the county
an excellent jail, and accommodations for 20 prisoners.
The business of Jasper during 1S93 was somewhat curtailed bv
the stringency incident to the effort of Eastern bankers to .control the
government, and yet there was no 1 r i
ii uusmess iauure or suspension among Jasper business firms, but all met their liabilities promptly, and did a large and prosperous business. There was over a million
and a i.-df of brick put in houses in J asper in 1893. There wits built, in factories, business bouses and resi
dences, forty-five nice buildings, the largest of which is the new office
desk factory.

The Union Flour Mtlln, On North Mill street in Jasper, is
one of the best flour mills in Southern Indiana, its capacity being about
75 barrels of flour per day. It is
owned by two as straight and square business men as the world contains
Mr. Edward A. Bohnert and Mr.

tives of Jasper, who conduct tho business under the firm name of
Bohnert Brothers. They are sons
of the late Wendolin Bohnert, a
turdy blacksmith and fanner, and
one of the pioneers of the town, who died Feb. 10, 187G. The mill also grinds corn, and the firm deals
I largely in grain and seeds in addi
tion to their milling. They handled last year 10,000 bushels of grain, and shipped 200 cars of flour, wheat
'and seed, the business aggregating
probably $75,000. The owners were both farmers when they bought tho mill in 1890. Albert was bom Sept. 27,. 1867,
