THE rvtALfff OV THE WOULD.
Aa KitwaMM'TMary aa ta Ita fataaUlai ity fer lacrenutaf; Few people, even amoug profotvod politicians, bavo much idea of the wealth of tho world or of tho man ner ia which' that wealth ia crow tag. Still fowcr havo any notion of tho potentiality of wealth to in crease. M. Jaanet quotes the elab orate calculation of an ingenious au thor to show that 100 francs, accu mulating' at 5 per cent ccupound in terest for seven centuries, would bo sufficient to buy the whole surface of tho globe, both land and water, at tnoratoof 1,000,000 f nines (40,000) the hoc tarn The actual crowth of rich os has not hitherto asauxnod such inconvenient proportions. AI. Jannet cites various authorities to show that tho wealth of the United Kingdom exceeds 10,000,000,000; that of France, .8,000, 000,ooo; that or au Europe, 40,000,000, 0Q0; that of tho United States, 14,000,000,000. If , wo placo tho wealth of tho rest of tho world at 20,000, 000,000 wo shall arrive at an aggregate of 80,000,000,000. Wo should have, wo may add, to multiply this vast sum, which according to M. Jannets ingenious authority 100 francs accumulating at 5 per cent compound interest for 700 years would grow. Tho figures wo havo given are so vast that they convey no appreciable idea to tho ordinary reader. It may assist tho apprehension if it be added that Franco on tho averago possesses moro than 200, tho United Kingdom more than 250" for each member of tho population. Just 200 years ago Sir W. Petty estimated the entire wealth of England at only 250,000,000. Two centuries, therefore, havo increased it fortyfold. But the chief additions to it have been made in the lost 50 years, and we believe that wo are not far wrong in saying that tho sum which is annually added to the capital of the United Kingdom amounts to 200,000,000, or in other words is nearly equal to its entire wealth at the timo of the revolution of 1C88. Edinburgh Review. Aa Early Aaaericaa Yacfet. Cleopatra's Barge was launched in December, 1616. The yacht was rigged as a brigantine and cost about 50,000 oven at that early day. She measured 83 feet on tbe water line, was 22 feet Hi inches wide and 11 feet 5i in che deep. Curiously enough these dimensions and proportions are not very different from those of the cup defender Mayflower and her successors. Her tonnage was 191f tons nearly almost exactly that of tho Mayflower under tho old rules of measurement. In spite of her owner's love of seamanship his taste in the matter of decoration seems to have been, to say tho least, eccentric one tade of tho yacht was painted in horizontal stripes of many colors, and the other bore a similarly diversified device after the manner of tho herring bone pattern. Her standing rigging was made of ropes laid in different colored strands, huge false windows were painted on tho sides of her cabin, and altogether she must havo been distinctly at variance with what is considered 'shipshape" at tho present day. Nevertheless she was very fast and boat the miling frigate United States, a crack ship of her day, in an all day race at sea. Har per s weekly. Tlie Xoea'e XJ sales. Some partisans of final causes have imagined that the moon was gfvrn to the earth to afford it light during the night But in this case nature would not havo attained the end proposed, sinco wo are often deprived at the sate time of tho light of both sun and moon. To Luve accom plished this end it would havo been sufficient to havo placed the moon at first in opposition to tho sun and in tho plane of tho elliptic at a distance from tho earth equal to tho one hundreth part of the distanco of the earth from tho sun, and to havo impressed on the earth and moon par allel velocmet: proiorüonal to their distances frcm the sun. In this case the moon, being constantly in oppo sition to the sun, would have described round it an ellipse similar to tnat of the earth. These two bodies would then constantly succeed each other, and as a this distance the moon could not bo eclipsed its light would always replace that of the sun. Law euid Mrdictae. We havo directed attention to th fact that railroad doctors are the poorest paid of all railroad employees, while railroad lawyers are the bent paid. Further, those latter become in a professional way so familiar with changes in railroad affairs that they are able to purchase or sell rail road securities to their own certain profit In a well known aeddeat insurance company a lawyer receives a salary of $10,000 a year for about aa hour's work daily, while a doctor, better educated and quite as able, who gives moro than half his time in serving this samo company, gets $1,000 a year. Comment ia unnecessary. Of course the difficulty lies in the fact that the company wantg this lawyer above all others and pays him accordingly, while it would tike any one of dotwos of doctors, s4oold the one holding the place asQseto resign lt. l(ker Pries Fer Ceaeunera, but Xu Trot Tor Predttear. Western soil is especially adapted to raising farm producta. For this reaaoa good roads intwt bo the work of art rather than of nature. And tho greater tho crops the more aeccMity there is for easy transportation from the farm to the elevators. It has been estimated that good roads would increaso tbe valuo of two-thirds of the good farms in tho Mississippi and Missouri valleys $10 an acre. In addition to tho differenco in tho cost of hauling Bhould bo considered tho great amount of vegetables, garden and dairy products which are shipped by rail from long distances. Under onr present system of dirt roads it is not profitable to inako a garden very far from the city market Farmers liv ing 8 or 10 miles from the city find it diffi cult to supply customers regularly. As a result they raise only enough to Bupply their own wants and trust to tho general market for tho disposal of butter and eggs when they come to town. But conditions are such that a great many reach market at tho samo time, and after a few days of scarcity in fresh goods carry an abundanco which breaks the market. With gravel or macadam roads farmers would find gardens profitable, and they could make daily or tri weekly trips with a regularity which would benefit themselves and their cus tomers alike. In large cities tho trade has been forced to keep a good supply of fresh articles constantly on hand, and having learned tnat tho home gardeners are not reliably regular they havo arranged for receipts from other sections, frequently from other states, at an extraordinary expense. Thus tho farmer not only loses a near market, but consumers pay for trans portation, packing and losses, besides getting staler food When local conditions aro favorable. the city dealer dares not transfer his trade to the market gardens near home. but must continue to trade abroad at greater cost because his correspondents will not submit to irregularity. It is plain that both town and country suffer for lack of reliable roads. Kansas City Times. r-etltlon For a Good Roada Department. That the right of petition has lost none of its popularity was evidenced recently when four pages rolled into tho senate chamber a request signed by 150,000 citi cens for a department of good roads, It was presented by Senator Hoar and had among tho signers the governors of 17 str-i, the Massachusetts legislature and everu banks and chambers of commerce. The peti tion is 1,400 yards long and was wound around two immense spools mounted on a polished oak frame over seven feet high, the whole weighing 800 pounds. The petition prayed that there shall be founded in Washington a road department similar to the agricultural de- tue petition. partment for the purpose of promoting knowledge in tho art of constructing and maintaining roads, and asks that in such department provision be made for teaching students. It was referred to tbe committee on interstate commerce. While a large majority, if not almost all, of the senators and representatives are in favor of the good roads movement, they aro not ia favor of creating an additional execntivo department, and though the petition will fail of its object it shows how widespread is the movement for improved country highways. Remda of Chlaa. An interesting chapter on tho topic of public roads is afforded in the results noted by the Shanghai branch of the Asiatic society of some recent extensive investigations made by its agents as to tbe condition and maintenance of roads in China. It is not, however, a chapter on good roads. Indeed it is much like tho famous chapter on the snakes in Iceland, for there seem to bo no roads in China worthy the name. Instead of the farmers being interested in the making and maintenance of good roads, as is the case here, the Chinese farmer interests himself largely in the destruction of such roads nay chance to be made. He does not travel himself and is against any one else doing so, at least over bis land. There are no public highways made and maintained by law. Travelers may drive where they pleaso, so far as tho owaer of tbe land may please, and there is constant warfare between the two classes, so that all there is of roads through the country is just what the one ay saffer or the other wrest New York Sun.
