St. Locis, Jan. 12. At 7 o'clock Wednesday night four negroes appeared at the residence of Farmer Kenne, one-half mile south of Florishant. St Louis county. They inquired of the hired man if the farmer was at home. Receiving an afiirmative answer, one entered the house while the other three set upon the hired man vrith clubs. He was pounded into helplessness and left lying on the ground. Following the first the other three also entered the house, where Mrs. Uenne.was found. He was viciously assaulted and left bleeding and insensible where he fell. The farmhouse was plundered. It was ransacked from top to bottom. Nothing was left in place. Drawers
were emptied, boxes opened and even clocks upset. The timepieces all stopped at 7 o'clock, thus giving the hour of thc visit of the robbers.

posse were soon scouring the country, but with four hours start the negroes made good their escape. It is believed that one of them was at one time employed on the Kenne farm, and thus knew of Fanner Kcnne's practice of keeping large sums of money in the house.

Thomas Dobbins, of Meeker avenue,
Drooklyn, reached thc scene in a roiv-
boat in time to save four men who
were ou the point of sinking. Th
captain of the schooner rescued over a dozen men. He got away before his name or that of his vessel could Ix
learned.
After striking the water the drawbroke into two parts, and in an instant both were covered with men. Some
managed to climb up clear of the wa
ter, while others hung on to keep their
heads uliove water. It took considers-
bla time to get all the men ashore. As fast as they were landed they wert taken to Toner's Pennvbridge hotel
and filled up with stimulants.
Many of the rescued had clo-e calls
and for a long time after they were

weeks, owing to pile drivers working

overcrowding of the bridge. He satd that he had frequently warned the
men not to crowd on the bridge, ah it
was dangerous to do so, but thcr paid no attention to his repeated
warnings. He could not account for

and Pat McNamara, of Meeker avenue. Drooklyn, both had narrow escapes. They do not know how they got ashore, nnd say they came near drowning. The search for bodies was kept up till a late hour but none were recovered.
