CHAPTER m. TIIE BAD HOY'S FOCRTU OF JULY. "How long do you think it will bo before your father will bo ablo to como down to the office?" asked tho druggist of tho bad boy ns ho was baying boiuo arnica and conrt plaster. 'Oh, the doc says ho could como down now if ho would on somo street whcro thero wcro no horses to scare," said tho boy as ho bought sonio guin. "But ho eays ho ain't in no hurry to como down till his hair grows out and ho gets soino now clothes made. Say, do you wet this court plaster and stick it on?' Tho druggist told him how tho court plaster worked and then nsked him if his Pa couldn't ride down town. "Ride down? Well, I guess nix. Ho would havo to sit down if ho rodo down town, and Pa is no eetter this trip. Ho U a pointer. That's whero tho pinwheel struck him." "Well, how did it all happen?" asked tho druggist as ho wrapped a yellow paper over tho bottlo of arnica and twisted tho ends and then helped tho boy tick tho strip of court plaster on his nose. "Nobody knows how it happened but Pa, and when I como near to nsk him about it ho feels around his nightshirt whero Ids pistol pocket would bo if it was pants ho had on and tells mo to leave his sight forever, and Heave, too, quick. You see, ho is afraid I will get hurt every Fourth of July, and ho told no if I wouldn't firo a firecracker all day ho would let mo get $i worth of nico fireworks, and ho would firo them off for me in tho evening in tho backyard. I promised, and ho gavo mo tho money, and I bought o dandy lot of fireworks, and don't you forget it. I had a lot of rockets and roman candles, and six pinwheels, and a lot of nigger chasers, and some of theso cannon firecrackers, and torpedoes, and a box of parlor matches. II took them homo and put tho packago in our big Btuffed chair and put a newspaper over them.
found him standing on tho sidewalk when tho grocery was opened in the, morning, taking some pieces of brick out of his conttail pockets. "Oh, sho got back at miduight last night," said tho boy ns ho eat afow blueberries out of a case. "That's what makes mo up so early. Pa has been kicking at theso pieces of brick with his bare feet, and when I camo away ho had Ida toes in his hand and was trying to go back tip stairs on ono foot. Pa haint got no senso." "I am afraid yon aro n terror," said tho grocery man ns ho looked at tho innocent faco of tho boy. "You aro always making your parents somo trouble, and it is a wonder to mo they don't send yon to somo reform school. What doviltry were you up to last night to got kicked this morning?" "No deviltry, just a little fun. You see, Ma went to Chicago to stay a week, and sho got tired and telegraphed ßho would bo homo last night, and Pa was down towu, and I forgot to givo him tho dispatch, and after ho went to bed mo and a chum of mino thought we would have a Fourth of July.

"Just then the explosion took -place." . "Pa always takes a nap in that atuifed chair after dinner, and ho went into tho sitting room, nnd I heard him driving our poodle dog out of tho chair and heard him ask tho dog what ho was a-chewing, nnd just then tho explosion took place, and wo all rushed in thero. I tell you what I honestly think. I think that dog was chewing that box.of parlor matches this kind that pop bo when you step on them. Pa was just going to et down when tho wholo air was filled with dog antl Pa and rockets and everything. When I got in thero, Pa had a aofa pillow trying to put tho dog out, and in tho meantimo Pa's linen pants wero afire. I grabbed a pail of this in
digo water that they had been rinsing clothes with and throwed it on Pa, or thero wouldn't havo been a placo on hiui Wgger'n a sixpenco that wasn't burnt, and then ho throw a enmp chair at mo and told mo to go to Gehenna, Ma says that's tho new hell they havo got up in the revised edition of tho Biblo for bad boys. When Pa's pants wero out, his coattail blazed up, and a roman candlo was firing blue nnd red balls at his legs, and a rocket got into his white vest. Tho sccno beggared description, liko tho Racino fire. "A nigger chnscr got after Ma and treed her on top of tho sofa, nnd another ono took after a girl that Ma invited to dinner and burnt ono of her ntockings bo she had to wear ono of Ma's stockings, a good deal too big foi her, home. After things got a littlo quiet, and wo. oponod the doors and windows to let out tho Bnokoand tho smell of burnt dog hair and Pa's whiskers, tho big firecrackers began to go off, and a policemnn camo to the door and asked what was tho matter, and Pa told him to go along with mo to Gehenna, but I don't want to go with a policeman. It would givo mo dead away. 'Well, thero was nobody hurt much but the dog and Pa. I felt awful eorry for the dog. Ho hasn't got hair enough to cover hisself . Pa didn't havo much hair anyway, except by tho cars, but ho Br a Mia, em nsiu, ft..; -i .oor .a-,-thought a good deal of Ins wniskors, ''cause thoy wasn't very gray. Bay, ' conldn'tyou send this anarchy up to tho , ouse? If I go up thero, Pa will say I am the damcst fool on record. This is tho .hit Fourth of July yon catch mocolokbratimr. I am coiner to work in a uluo
Flactory whcro nobody will over como to
I Me me." And tho boy went out to pick npeomo qnib firecrackers that had failed to explodo in front of tho drug store. W CHAPTER IV. THE HAD l!OY8 MA COM13 HOME. "When is your Ma coming back?" nsked Lvm grocery man of tho bad boy m ho
"jrc tried to stab tnc iclth h In big toe nail." "You see, my chum has got a sister about as big as Ma, and wo hooked somo of her clothes, and nfter Pa got to snoring wo put them in Pa's room. Oh, you'd 'a' laffed. We put a pair of No. 1 slippers with bluo stockings down in front of tho rockincr chair besido Pa's
boots, and a red corset on a chair, and my chum's sister's best blnck silk dress on another chair, and a hat with a white feather on on tho bureau, and somo frizzes on tho gas bracket, and everything wo could find that belonged to a girl in my chum's sister's room. Oh, wo goira red parasol, too, andleft it right in tho middle of tho floor. "Well, when I looked at tho layout and heard Pa snoring,! thought I should die. Yon Eee, Ma knows Pa is a darn good feller, but sho is easily excited. My chum slept with mo that night, nnd when wo heard tho doorbell ring I stuffed a pillow in my mouth. Thero was nobody to meet Ma at tho depot, and sho hired a hack and camo right up. No
body heard tho bell but me, and I had to go down and let Ma in. Sho was pretty hot, now, you bet, at not being met at the depot.
" 'Whero s your fathcrr said sh3 as sho began to go up stairs. "I told her I guessed Pa had gone to Bleep by this time, but I heard a good deal of noise in tho room about an hour ago, and maybe ho was taking a bath. Then I slipped up stairs and looked over tho banisters. Ma said something about heavens and earth, and whero is tho busBy, and a lot of tilings I couldn't hear, nnd Pa said damfino, and it's no such thing, and tho door slammed, and thoy talked for two hours. "I s'poso they finally layed it to me, ns they always do, 'causo Pa called mo very early this morning, and when I camo down stairs ho camo out in tho hall, and his faco was redder'n a beet, and ho tried to stab mo with his big too nail, and if it hadn't been for theso pieces of brick ho would havo hurt my feelings. I seo they had my chum's sister's clothes all pinned up in a newspaper, and I s'poso when 1 go back I shall havo to carry them home, nnd then sho will be down on mo. I'll toll you what, I havo got a good notion to tako somo shoemaker's wax and stick my chum on my bck and travel with a circus as a doublo headed boy from Borneo. A follow could havo moro fun and not get kicked all
tho time."
And the boy sampled some strawber
ries in a caso in front of the store and went down tho street whistling for his chum, who wns looking out of an alley
to seo u tho coast was clear.
