From tbc luJIanaplli 8tntlnel.
The atate board of tax comaiBsfoMM
has fixed its rating of railroads ad a
nouucea that It will stand as now km
subject only to appeals or dissatisfied railroad companies. The result Is a d-' crease of $734, 522 In the total assessmMt,
notwithstanding the addition or tbeitw road, the Montpeller & Chicago, wbteh
ia valued by the board at fl,157,UO. Taking this out, the reduction of railroad property from last year's assessment ia $1,901,872. The assessment of last year
made a decrease from the year preceding of $213,773, so that iu the course of two
years the hoard has reduced the railroad
assessment $'2,115,045, notwithstanding
the general improvement of tbc lines and gmioral itnreasq ot their earnings. So much of the ground gained by the new tax,law of 1891 has been loet. So much of tho ndvanco towaid an equitable tax-
ation of the great corporations of tbt atate baa been retraced. We are on tbt
road back to tho evils from wblcb we had to some extent escaped.
