- ' DY' GEGRGEPECK. C0' J Wfrri'ifcP IS9T7 1 AltR'-vArf PRESS ASSOCIATION ( CHAPTER I. THK BOY WITH A LA3IK HACK. A young follow who is pretty smart on general principles and who is always in good humor went into a storo tho other morning limping ami teemed to bo broko up generally. Tho proprietor asked him if ho wouldn't sit down, and ho said ho couldn't very well, as hid back was lamo. Ho seemed discouraged, and tho proprietor asked him what was tho matter. "Well," said he as ho put his hand on his pistol pocket and groaned, "thcro is no encouragement for a boy to havo any f nn nowadays. If a boy tries to play an innocent joke, ho gets kicked all over tho house." Tho storekeeper asked him what had happened to disturb his hilarity. He said ho had played a joko on his father and had been limping over since. "You seo, I thought tho old man wa a littlo spry. You know ho is no spring cliicken yourself, and though his eyes aro not what thoy used to bo yet ho can seo a pretty girl further than I can. Tho other day I wroto a noto in a fmo hand and addressed it to him, asking him to meet mo on tho corner of Wisconsin and Milwaukeo streets at 7:30 on Saturday evening, and signed tho namo of 'Daisy' to it. At supper timo Pa ho was all shaved up and had his hair plastered over tho bald spot, and ho got on Eomo clean cuffs and said ho was going to tho consistory to iniHato somo candidates from tho country, and ho might not le In till late. Ho didn't eat much snpper and hurried off with my umbrella, I winked at Ma, but didn't say anything. At 7:30 I went downtown, and ho was standing tlicro by tho postoffico cornor in a dark place. I went by him and said, Hello, Pa, what nro you doing there? Ho said ho was waiting for a man. I went down street, and pretty soon 1 went up on tho other corner by Chapman's, and ho was standing there. Yon seo, ho didn't know what corner 'Daisy' was going to bo on and had to cover all four corners. "Tic gave mc a dollar." "1 saluted him and asked him if he hadn't found hia man yet, and ho said no; the man was a littlo late. It is a moan boy that won't speak to his Pa whon ho sees him standing on a corner. I went up street, and I saw Pa cross over hy tho drug storo in a sort of a hurry, und I could seo a girl going by with a waterproof on, but sho skited right along, and Pa looked kind of Eolemn, tho way ho does when I ask him for now clothes. I turned and camo back, and ho was atanding thero in tho doorway, and I said: 'Pa, you will catch cold if you stand around waiting for a man. You go down to tho consistory and let mo lay for tho man.' Pa said, 'Never you mind; you go aboutyour business, and I willottend to tho man.' "Well, when a boy's Pa tells him to never you mind and looks spunky, my experienco is that ahoy wants to go right away from thero, and I went down street. I thought I would cross over nnd go up tho other sido and seo how long ho would stay. Thcro was a girl of two going up ahead of mc, and I seo a man hurrying across from tho drug storo to Van Pelt's corner. It was Pa, and as tho girls went along and nover looked around Palookcd mad and stepped into tho doorway. It was about 8 o'clock then, and Pa was tired, and I felt sorry for him, and I went up to him and asked him for half a dollar to go to tho Academy. I never know him to shell out bo freely and so quick. Ho gavo mo a dollar, and I told him I would go and get itchnnged and bring him back tho half a dollai1, but ho paid I needn't mind tho change. It ia awfnl mean of a boy that has always been b t- ited well to play it on hia Pa that way, and I felt ashamed. "As 1 turned the corner and paw him Rtanding thero shivering, wailing for tho man, my conscience troubled in and I told a policeman to go and tell Pa that 'Daisy' had been suddenly taken with worms and would not lw thero that evening. I peeked around tho corner, and Pa and tho policeman wont off to got a drink. I was glad they did, 'causo Pa needed it after standing around ho long. Well, when I went homo, tho joko was. so good I told Ma about It, and sho was mad. I guess sho vlws mad at mo for treating Pa that way. I .heard Pa como homo about 11 o'clock, and Ma was real kind to him. Sho told him to warm his feet, 'causo they wero just liko chunks of ice. Then she asked him how many they Initiated In tho consistory, and ho said six, and then sho asked him if thoy Initiated Daisy' in tho consistory, and pretty soon I heard Pa snoring. In tho morning ho . took mo Into tho ImBement nnd gavo mo tho hardest talking to ljat I over had with a bed Blat, ' IU naidiho know that I Wrote that noto all jlr time, and ho
thought ho would pretend that ho was looking for 'Daisy' just to fool mo. "It don't look reasonable- that n man would catch epizootic and rheumatism just to fool his boy, does it? What did ho givo mo tho dollar for? Ma nnd Pa don't seem to call each other pot any moro, and as for mo they both look at m as though 1 was a hard citizen. I am going to Missouri to tako Jesso James' place. There is no encouragement for a boy here. Well, good morning. If Pa comes in hero asking for mo, tell him that you saw an express wagon going to tho morguo with tho remains of a pretty Ikv who acted as though ho died from concussion of n bed slat on tho pistol pocket. That will mako Pa feel sorry. Oh, ho has got tho awfulest cold, though." And tho boy limped out to separate a couplo of dogs that wero fighting. CHAPTER II. Tin: had hoy at woiik again. Of coursoall boys aro not full of tricks, but tho best of them are. That is, thoso who aro tho readiest to play innocent jokes and who aro continually looking for chances to mako Romo howl nro tho most apt to turnout to be first class business men. Thero is a boy iu tho Seventh ward who is so full of fun that sometimes it makes him ache. Ho is tho samo boy who not long sinco wroto n noto to his father and signed tho namo "Daisy" to it nnd got tho old man to stand on a corner for two honrs waiting for tho girl. After that ncrapo tho old man told tho boy that ho had no objection to innocent jokes, such as would not bring reproach upon him, and as long as tho boy confined himself to jokos that would simply causo pleasant laughter nnd not cause tho finger of scorn to bo pointed at a parent he would ho tho last ono to kick. So tho boy has been for threo weeks trying to think of snmo innocent joko to play on his father. Tho old'inan is getting a littlo near sighted, nnd his teeth aro not as good as they used to be, but the old man will not admit it. Nothing that anybody can say can mako him own up that his eyesight is failing or that his teeth aro poor, and ho would bet $100 that he could seo as far as ever. Tho boy knew tho failing and niado up his mind to demonstrate to tho old man that ho was rapidly getting off his base. Tho old ierson is very fond of macaroni and eats it about threo times a week. Tho other day tho boy was in a drug storo and noticed in a sliowcaso a lot of small rubber hoso about tho sizo of sticks of macaroni, such as is used on nursing bottles and other rubber utensils. It was whito aud nice, and tho boy's mind was made up at once. Ho bought a yard of it and took it home. When the macaroni was cooked and ready to bo served, ho hired tho table girl to help him play it on tho old man. They took a pair of
I shears and cut tho rubber hoso in pieces about tho samo length as tho pieces of boiled macaroui nnd put them in a saucer with a littlo macaroni over tho rublwr pipes and placed the dish at tho old man's pinto. Well, wo snpposo if 10,000 people could havo had rescrvo seats and seen tho old man stmgglo with tho india rubber mac aroni and havo seen tho boy's struggle to keep from laughing they would havo had moro fun than they would at a circus. First tho old delegato attempted to cut tho macaroni into small pieces, and failing ho remarked that it was not cooked enough. Tho boy said hia macaroni was cooked too t .ider, and that his father's tooth wt -o so poor that ho would havo to cat soup entirely pretty soon. Tho old man said, "Is over you mind my teeth, young man," and decided that ho would not complain of anything again. Ho took up a couplo of pieces of rubber and ono pieco of macaroni on a fork and put them in his mouth. Tho macaroni dissolved easy enough and went down jwrfectly easy, but the flat macaroni was too much for him. Ho chewed on it for a minute or two and talked about tho weather in order that nono of tho family should see that ho was in trouble, and when ho found that tho macaroni would not go down ho called their attention to something out of tho window and took tho nibTie chewed liken seminary ylrl chewing gum. ber plyly from his mouth nnd lnid it under tho edgo of his plate. IIo was moro than half convinced that his teeth wero played cat, but wont on eatinj; something -'Iso 1'fr awhih), and finally ho thought ho would just chanco tho macaroni onoo more for hick, and ho mowed nway another forkful in his mouth. It was tho samo old try. 1 fo chewed liko a BCininary girl chewing gum, und his cyosfltuck out, and his face became red, nnd his wife looked at him nn though nfrnid ho was going to die of npoplexy, nnd finally tin wrvant girl burst out latigliing and went out of the room with her apron Btnffed in her mouth, and the boy felt ns though it was unhealthy to tarry too long at tho table, and ho went out. Left nlono with his wifo tho old man took tho rubber macaroni from his mouth nnd laid it on his plato, nnd ho and his wifo held nn inquest over it. Tho wife ' tried to Kpoar it with a fork, but couldn't j mako any impression on it, nnd then sho I saw it was rubber hoso and told the old i man. IIo was mad and glad at tho samo time glad becnusoho had found that his ' teeth wero not to blamo nnd mad be ! causo tho grocer had Fold him lioanling t honso macaroni. Then tho girl camo in nud was put on tho confessional and told all, nnd presently thcro was n Round of revelry by night in tho wood plied, nnd tho still, small voice was paying: "Oh.

Pa, don't. You paid you didn't care for innocent jokes. Ohl'' And then tho old man between tho strokes of tho piece of clapltoard would Kiy: "Feed your father n hoso cart next, i won't ye? JJo firing car springs aud clothes wringers down mo nest, eh? Put soino gravy on n rubber overcoat probably und servo it to mo for salad. Try a piece of overshoe with a bono in it for my beefsteak likely. Givo your poor old father a tdieo of rubber bib in place of t ripe tomorrow, 1 wepoct. Boil mo a rubber water bag for npplo dumplings pretty soonif I don'tlookout. Thero! You go aud split tho kiudling wood." 'Twas ever thus. A boy can't havo any fun uowadays. ' fJ'J SC COKTLVCXO. '
Tho rinlut rTlichWiIy. Contemplation of tho conditions of Thessalian ngriculturo wealth of sun, fertilizing1 rains nutl stream?, nn almost inexhaustiblo soil, steady markets and light taxation turns our envious, wistful thoughts hackto tho lmrcl wrung, often ungrateful fields with which British farmers havo to deal. Thero is plenty of English machinery in Thossaly already; tho energy of tho Greek government in roadmaking has opened access to traction engines, reaping and thrashing machines. "SVlint forbids somo of our English farmers from settling in this laud of promise? Well, tho chief obstaelo seems to bo tho ineradieahlo jealousy which tho Greeks bear toward foreign enterprise. It was this that put an end to the profitable business of a French and Italian mining company at Lauritmi. It is this which threatens to make abortive for tho timo M. Trieoupis' heneficent work in reoiMming tho ancient canals aud draining Lake Copais in Boeotia, where tho riparian peasant proprietors resist au influx of strangers to till tho land which thoy themselves aro unablo to take in hand.
