We are Indebted to the courtoiy of Mr. John T. Melchoir, President of the School Board of Jasper, for tha following Information in regard to the special School Board meatlm hold on Wednesday night. A potiilon was presontod bMr.W.S Hunter, signed by a number of cltizons, asking for tho establishment of a stato commissioned high achoolby tho Board for tho ensuing choolterm. The potition was taken under consideration and it was determined by the Board that if it was granted, it would also necessitate tho establishing of another additional school for boys of tho Catholic church. It was Anally determined to establish two graded schools and numbor tho Departments as follows, and employ tho following taachors for each room. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS. The editor of the Coürieb has always understood that the so-called "coraraisioned liafof Higrh Schools was votod upon at a regular meeting of the State Board, and that scnooia were oniy aufitted upon a verified statement that certain required branches wero regularly taught. Its a humbug at best. Tha Board also decidod to rent throo rooms from St. Joseph's congregation for tha Catholic schools, to be paid for from tha nublic funds. Tha wares of the teachers for the next term were placed at 2 per day for the primary and intermediate departments and grram mir department in the Catholic school, and 13 per day for the Grammar and High School departments in the rental schools, and that teachers sboold have no pay tor auonuing mau tutec. Tuition for outsiders who wish to aend to the schools was fixed at 75 cants oer month for the primary and inter mediate departments, $1 per month for the Grammar, and 11 GO per month for the Hieb School. A list showing about $25 now duo the town for tuition for children last year, and which ought to be promptly paid now, was presented, and tbo Sec'y was ordered to seed the delinquent parents dune, and collect the money. The Board fixed no time for regular meeting, but adjourned to meet again when tha Secretary shall receive inform ation from Stato Superintendent Vöries In regard to a teachor for the High School. The retiring Treasurer of tho School Board failed to mako any report, and consenuentlv the Board could not de termine its nrsscnt financial condition. Soldier Monument. ROLL Of HONOR. IFrow Our lURuUr Correspondent. OUK WASHINGTON LETTER Washington, D, C, Juno 10, 1693.
Tho President has been sullbriiig from an attack of rheumatism tor several davs. which taken in connection with tho knowltidgo that ho has been dieting himself for somo time to reduce hi HorI), which notwithstanding tho cnor mous quantity of the hardest sort of work ho constantly doos, has been in creasiutr, was niado tho foundation lor unmorous sensational rumors concern' int his goneral health. Your corres pondent is assured by thoso who know thai Mr, Ulcvclamra general noaitn, oar ring tho rheumatism, is excellent. Ho exnocts.in company with Mrs Clo olaud and Baby Ruth, to loavo Washing ton for his Buzzard Hay cottage, where Mrs. Cleveland and Ruth will spend the summer. Mr. Cleveland will ietum to Washington within a week or ten days, possibly sooner, and will remain, making occasional visits to Bumrd's Ihy un til the last ol July wnctt no expects to go for at least a mouth's stay. Tho Tact month ot that ho expects to spend tho August away from Washington cU'ectually disposed of tho rumored earlier calling of tho extra hcssIou of Congress, a rumor that probably hud its only origin in the wishes of thoso who have been here clamoring for an immediate extra session. Tho coroner's jury has completed its task of Investigating tho Kuril's Thea tor catastrophe, and its verdict i looked forward to with tho greatest intorot It is woll nigh certain that it will hlatno Col. Ainsworth for contributory negli genco. if for nothing worse. In that caso tho grand jury will probably imlict Aiuewnrtli fni- iiiiuialiiiiclitciv ml ilci' finding will also necessarily carry some weight with tho Army Court of Inquiry which will look into tho matter thi week. Col. Ainsworth U still nt the hoatl of the Records and Pension Oilicc of tho War Department, und, owing to tho peculiar conditions surrounding the positiou, would etill he the legal head ol the office and contiuuo to draw hi; sal ary, even it no wero suspended uy tue President, as he may be before the end of this week. Ainsworth is a Colonel in the Army, but betas neither regi ment nor command ; he is not in the iae of promotion, and cannot bo trans ferred to other duties by tho President, and ho is tho only man in the army who cannot bo. Col. Ainsworth can unl be removed from the army by Court Martial, and so lonj as he romalus in the army it is doubtful whother tho President has authority to appoint any other chief of tho Record and Pension OHice, although he can designate anothor army officer to perform the duties tempo rarily. A littlo political tinge has been given tho matter by the appearance of Senator Proctor as tbo special champiou of Ainsworth. Although Sec. Grcsham will neither affirm nor deny tho statement that Min ister Blount has resigned, those who Know tho intentions of Mr. Blount, nay it is true, and the presenco of lion. Proctor Knott, of Kentucky, in Washngtou, has caused the belief that he will be his successor. Twenty army officers have been dotailed, under tho act of July. 1892. to act as Indian agents. Tbero was considera ble Ultuculty in Unding officers willing to servo anu tno rresiuent did not care to detail men for tho duty against their wtsnes. When noxt pension day comes round uore win do somo disagreeably sur prised mon among thoso who will apply tor tneir cnecks at soveral of tho Pun sion agencies throughout tho country the fail uro to receive tho customary check will bo tho first notico these men will have that they have boon dropped from the pension roll, as a result of the examination now beiner conducted by a select committee of examiners, of all the poiibions grantod under Kaum's con struction of the act of 18U0. Although this work has just commenced many names havo already been dropped and many more will follow. Tho men who are being dropped by this committee are not strictly spoakinir fraudulent non sioners, although thoy havo drawn pub no money to which thoy wero not onti tied. The wrone. If an v. was committed by Jtaum In so construing tho law as to mako them eligible for ponslons, and for that reason it ia not nrobablo that any attempt will bo made to rocover the money already paid to thoso who havo been or will be dropped, as will ho done in cases where tho pensioner got tho nu roll by fraudulent acta of his own. The ruling will likely load to an effort to enact tho much talked pordiein pension act. ine uovornmont is able enough io pension an us preservers. Congressman Tucker, of Virginia says if Mr, Carl is o koens on tbo wav ho has begun ho will bo tho ideal of democ racy and their candidato for the Presi. dency in 1890. Ho has dono two things that commend him mightily to tho popular favor the replacing of republican oiucisis wun uomocrats and nis rcfufling to bo bullied into issuing bonds, by the Wall street gamblers In bonds. 0.
